Content Management System/ Web Quality Initiative Administrative Departments

Web page editing tool Software to centralize web content System to add new functions Omni Update is our vendor What is a CMS?

What are the Benefits? o Easier to change the web look o Easier to add media such as photos o More flexible page layout o Changes can be reviewed and approved o Makes quality control easier o Web Comm can help from a central place

Current Process Local HTML Files UNC Web Server These are flat files sitting in a web author’s folder with text and HTML content all in one document.

How Does It Work? Public Web Server CMS ServerWeb Author Content is stored in a database, the template structure is stored separately, CMS server combines them.

What Happens in the CMS Server World? Content Structure Web Page

So What? o “Structure” can be changed without affecting content o Content can be single sourced (like a Dreamweaver library item) o Content can be shared o Content can be scheduled o Content can be searched

New Look New web templates – Modern design – Responsive for mobile – Consistent brand – Flexible content options – Will be available in CMS – Top level navigation – Sample: arts.unco.eduarts.unco.edu

What Will Conversion Be Like? Goal is to move all sites to CMS system Recruitment sites will be first priority for assistance New pages, cut and paste info from current site or clean Word doc Old site will be archived for one year Will be training through CETL and Web Comm

When Will This Happen? What we know now – Omni begins working on UNC templates in early Sept – Omni anticipates about three months for template coding and testing – Training will then happen for web team – Training will be scheduled for web authors – New permission forms will be submitted – Possibility of phased approach

What Can Be Done Right Now? CONTENT

Content? o Is it accurate? o Is it current? o Is it written for the audience? o Is it well written? o Is it the right amount of information? o Is it organized well?

Who is Your Audience? Here is who it is not: – Peers – You It may be: – Current student It probably is: – Prospective students

Think Like a User What do users want from your site? – What type of questions do you get? – Ask them – Research it – Stamats Teens Talk, national associations, conferences, award winning sites – Look at analytics

Writing for Web o Front load the main point o Use words users use o Use second person voice o Chunk content o Use short sentences and paragraphs o Use bulleted lists o Use clear headings o Use proper punctuation check spelling

Search Engine Optimization To help us be found in organic searches Not only words but correct HTML markup There will be training as part of the CMS training

The Tone o Personal, upbeat o Promotes UNC o Reflects UNC’s messaging of quality and approachability o Active voice

Is It the Right Amount? Of information? Of words? Web site is not a file cabinet When in doubt, leave it out

Recommendation

Content Inventory The page is accurate, up to date, and ready for migration The page is required but needs corrections before migration The page is obsolete or no longer needed and should not be migrated

Recommendation
