Why “Reverse Pitch” Goodwill Central Texas has a Zero Waste Goal – currently at 82% diversion. Glass/ceramics and wicker are currently being disposed in large volumes, leading to increased disposal cost and lost diversion. 5

Why do we have this material? Donations are accepted at retail stores, attended donation centers, and donation bins (~50 locations) Items that are damaged, or unsold (after 3 weeks) at retail stores are sent to central processing for recycling, salvage or disposal 6

DECORATIVE GLASS AND CERAMICS Reverse Pitch Competition

The Material Non-Container Glass, Ceramics, Terracotta – Estimated 70,000 lbs per month Peak volume in summer season, small spike in winter Approximately 1/3 of volume is unbroken – Non-container glass that is not recyclable with container glass stream – Examples: Dishware, decorative items, pottery, vases, glass cookware, flower pots 8

Current Process Unbroken material is culled from unsold donations and sold in small volumes to bulk buyers (~10,000 lbs per month). Low demand. Remainder is disposed via landfill. 10

Terms Pricing is Negotiable! – Will end user take broken material? – Will end user require a category sort? – Will end user pick up or require delivery? – How much volume can end user handle? – How will material need to be packaged (gaylord/pallet, bins, roll-off, etc.) 11

Current Reuse Options Resale of unbroken items Processing of material into aggregate for various uses – Landscape material – Craft material – Industrial aggregate (filter medium, roadway, sandblasting, etc.) 12

The Material Wicker baskets – Vast majority is painted, varnished, glued, otherwise treated and so is not compostable – Can produce ~ 1 CY box per day (80 lbs of baskets per day) 14
