Chapter 6 Learning Together Symone Slater

Intro.  The use of the Social Web is now heavily incorporated into the everything we do.  All Roads point to the Web where little is done in isolation and all things are collaborative and social in nature, including learning.  The ability to create, publish, share, and connect with others who share our interests has changed our relationship with the World Wide Web.

The Twitterverse  A “microblogging” tool  Introduced in 2006  Used to send quick updates to anyone that is “following” the person sharing an update  “Tweets” are limited to 140 characters.  Known for blending the personal and professional making users feel more a part of the lager conversation and a member of a community.

Using Twitter  Setting up a twitter account is easy.  Simply go to twitter.com, click sign-up and get started.  Follow your friends, classmates, family members, favorite stores, news stations and even some of your professors.  Although getting people to follow you may seem difficult if you start with you friends and family you’ll be sure to have followers.

Keeping the Conversation Going  If you see something on twitter and want to reply, place sign in front of their named to respond  Share you own learning on twitter  The more you participate, the more followers you’ll get M

Twitter in Education  Some schools are using Twitter as a way to communicate with the parents and others in the community  Students can find daily notices and links to other students live presentations nancialAid nancialAid  Parents can also find relevant articles on a variety of topics

Safety Many parents and some teachers worry about their students using twitter. There is a blocking capability that can be used to block people from following your students, but you can not block what your students see.

Social Bookmarking  Many people are using public, online bookmarking services  These sites help to put an end to what can be aimless searching by categorizing the information using “tags” (unique keywords) -Ex: If you find a great site that lists the 50 best free software programs for teachers Suggested tags: education, software, free stuff

Diigo  Diigo stands for “Digest of Internet Information, Groups and Other stuff.”  A tool that allows you to create your own pieces of the web  A way of organizing information not only for yourself but also allows you to collaborate with other people  Allows you to bookmark pages you find interesting but also highlight and annotate the info.

Using Diigo  Create an account  Click on the Diigolet like in the left-hand column after logging in  Whenever you land on a Webpage that you want to save, just click on the Diigolet button and you will see multiple options to work with.  When you find something that you want to highlight or take notes on. Right click the text and the option is right there for you. -there is also a sticky note capability reasons-teachers-should-use-diigo/

Delicous.com  All about sharing links in the easiest way possible  Tagging is everything on this site  Delicious bookmarks are available for anyone to follow whether by visiting the users pages or by RSS  The community of del.icio.us allows you to find some of the best resources on the Internet without having to trudge through all of the junk.

Using Delicious  If you want to find what anyone else has saved using the same tag, put the tag word at the end of the following: Delicious/tag/yourtaghere  Teachers sometimes have students all tag their links under one name (Ex. RJ101) that is unique to see collaborative class efforts.
