Welcome to Year 1 Teachers: Mrs Barbara Hemsley Mrs. Melanie Simms LSAs Mrs Jane Roebuck Mrs Anita Peddell

Year 1 daily expectations I n year 1 your child is expected to develop independence. This involves:  Coming into the class on their own.  Taking responsibility for organising their own belongings: water bottles, lunch boxes, coats and communication books.  Giving in letters/money etc.  Getting straight on with their morning task, e.g. handwriting.

Homework expectations  Practise your spellings each week.  Practise handwriting - forming all letters correctly including capital letters.  Practise writing all numbers to 20 in digits and words.  Practise reading at least 3 times a week.  Practise numbers bonds for all numbers to 20.  Practise counting in 2s 5s and 10s. We may give out extra activities on top of these related to our topic.

Class Rules · Children must adhere to the Golden Rules. · Children will be rewarded for showing the Silver Book Values: respect, caring, achievement, perseverance, and independence. Every time an adult notices a child displaying one of these values a value card and sticker will be given by the head teacher. · Each class have an independence pot to promote independent learning. The class get 5 mins extra Golden Time if they get 20 jewels in the pot.

Golden Time · Children receive 30 minutes Golden Time on a Friday afternoon. · Children will lose their Golden Time in 5 minute chunks if they break the Golden Rules. · Children will first receive a warning and then lose some of their Golden Time.

Curriculum Content · Autumn 1: Run, run as fast as you can · Autumn 2: Light it up · Spring 1: Flying high · Spring 2: Things that grow · Summer 1: Island adventure · Summer 2: Who is the lady with the lamp ·

New English Curriculum: · Phonics · Reading · SPaG: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar · Writing: Talk for write · Handwriting

Key Stage 1 Expected standard for reading · The pupil can: · read accurately by blending the sounds in words for all 40+ phonemes · read accurately some words of 2 or more syllables · read many common exception words · In age-appropriate books, the pupil can: · read aloud many words quickly and accurately without · excessive sounding and blending · sound out many words accurately · The child can answer questions and make inferences on books that are read to them.

Children should record their opinions about the texts they read in their reading diary. Reading and phonics will be streamed. Writing will generally be topic based, looking at a variety of different texts, such as longer stories, information texts, recounts, persuasive writing and poetry. Writing will not be streamed. Reading and library books  Children have guided reading sessions each week.  Children will be heard individually each week before changing their books to check comprehension and accuracy.  We will record the books they are taking home in their reading log to ensure they are reading a range of styles.  Every week your child can take a new library book if they return their previous one.

Reading activities at home  All parents have been sent home a leaflet with suggested reading activities and websites.  You will also receive a bookmark with suggested questions you can ask your child before, during and after reading a book.  Please ensure your child shares and reads other books with you, e.g. from the library or their own collections.  Children can record all books they read in their communication book.

Phonics · Children have discrete phonic lessons throughout the week helping them work on their current phase and preparing them for the Phonic Test in June. · In order to pass the test they need to be fluent in all phases to Phase 5).

Key Stage 1 Expected standard for writing The pupil can write sentences that are sequenced to form a short narrative. They need to: · use capital letters and full stops · use their phonic knowledge when spelling words · spell some common exception words · form lower case letters correctly · ensure letters are the correct size · leave spaces between words

Writing Process · Cold task – from which we set targets for the topic. · Learn the text using actions. · Teach skills relating to targets. · Hot task - where children apply their new skills.

In writing all children must: · form all letters correctly when writing on lines, i.e. descenders go down below the line and ascenders are tall · use capital letters at the beginning of sentences and for Proper Nouns (names) · use full stops at the end of a sentence · have clear spaces between words · spell the days of the week correctly · If your child is struggling with these please practise at home

Key Stage 1 Expected standard for maths The pupil can:  demonstrate an understanding of place value, though may still need to use apparatus to show this.  count up from 0 in 2s, 5s and 10s.  read and write numbers in numerals to 100.  use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20. ·add and subtract a 2 digit number and ones, and a 2 digit number and 10s, where no regrouping is required. ·recall doubles and halves to 20. ·recognise and name 2D and 3D shapes, i.e. triangles, rectangles, squares, circles, cuboids, cubes, pyramids and spheres. ·

Aims of the Curriculum The national curriculum for maths aims to ensure that all pupils:  become fluent in the fundamentals of maths, including problem solving.  they should be able to explain their methods and show their workings out.

Teaching Maths  Maths is taught daily.  Mental Maths - we teach strategies to solve number sentences mentally.  There are 7 topic areas: Problem Solving, Number and Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Measure, Geometry, Multiplication and Division, Fractions.  Children will be taught skills in each of these areas which should then be used in other topics e.g. finding half – of a number, of a shape, of a quantity, etc.

Things to work on in Maths · Number bonds of all numbers to 20. · Writing numbers in words and digits. · Recognising 2D and 3D shapes. · Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

In maths all children must:  Form numerals correctly.  Present their work in an organised way.  Write a number in each box.

Year 1 Phonics test June 2016 It is important your child is not absent at this time – or indeed the build up practise time.

Any questions?

The children have settled in tremendously well, let’s continue to have a great year!
