Why Is Agriculture Important? n n On a piece of Paper 1.Write down 5 things that come to mind when you here the word agriculture 2. Write down how you have interacted with agriculture today

n Advances in medicine and agriculture have saved vastly more lives than have been lost in all the wars in history.” Dr. Carl Sagan Summarize quote then answer: n What does this say about the importance of agriculture? n What advances in agriculture could this be talking about? n What advances do you see in future for agriculture?

Basic Agricultural Awareness

What are the basic needs of humans? Food Food Fiber Fiber Shelter Shelter

Basic Needs of Humans n Food - Provide our bodies with nourishment –Sources: Plants and Animals n Meat, eggs, milk, various parts of plants (leaves, stems, roots, fruits, and seeds)

Fiber (clothing) n To clothe and protect our bodies (avoids embarrassment) –Come from Plant and Animal Sources n Cotton, leather, furs, and by products mostly from plant oils that are used to make materials used in clothing.

n Shelter – to protect us from the elements –Come from plant and animals sources and from raw materials from the earth. n Forestry products, paper, steel, plastics, brick and cement.

Agriculture is about providing the products essential to life.

Define Agriculture! Activities concerned with the production of plants and animals, and related supplies, services, mechanics, products, processing and marketing. Agriculture is often labeled as “agriculture/agribusiness and renewable resources” Also as “The food, fiber and environmental systems industry.”

Agriscience/Agribusiness Defined Agriscience- The application of scientific principles to agriculture Agribusiness- Refers to commercial firms that have developed from agriculture

Is Agriscience like the other Sciences I have to take in High School? Let’s try to understand how it fits into the big picture of the sciences.

The Basic Sciences 1) Biology- The study of living things; both plants and animals 2) Chemistry- The study of nature and characteristics of elements and simple substances 3) Bio-Chemistry – The study of chemical activities or processes of living organisms.

Applied Sciences n Aquaculture n Agricultural Engineering n Animal Science n Agronomy n Soil Science n Biotechnology n Horticulture n Entomology Definition- The application of one or more of the basic sciences for practical (real life) purposes.

Agriscience Examples n Agronomy/Crop Science –Uses biology and chemistry to produce and control crops n Cotton n Soybeans n Tobacco n Hay and Turf grass

Agriscience Examples n Entomology –Uses biology and chemistry to study insect life n Agriculture Engineering –Uses physics to develop new machines, tools and implements

Agriscience Examples n Biotechnology –Uses biology, genetics, and chemistry to modify or change organisms for a useful purpose

n Horticulture – the science of producing, processing, and marketing of fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants. n Animal Science – the science of animal growth, care and management. n Soil Science – The science and study of the properties and management of soil to grow plants.

Scientific Method n Agriculture and other sciences use the Scientific Method to solve problems

Scientific Method n Identifies a Problem n Reviews Literature n Forms a Hypothesis n Prepare a Project Proposal n Design the Experiment n Collect the Data n Conclusions n Prepare a Written Report

Exit Ticket n 1. What are the 3 basic human needs? n 2. What is an applied science? n 3. What is the first step in the scientific method?

n Which is an applied science? – ? Chemistry – ? Entomology – ? Physics – ? Biology

n Which is often called an applied science since it uses principles learned in other sciences to solve practical problems? – ? Chemistry – ? Biochemistry – ? Agriculture – ? Biology

n In agriscience as well as other sciences, the method used to solve a problem is called the: – ? Process of elimination. – ? Scientific method. – ? Most popular decision technique. – ? Educated guess method.

n A local tractor dealership is BEST described as an: – ? Agribusiness. – ? Agri-Marketing Service. – ? Agriculture Production Enterprise. – ? Agriculture Display.

n The FIRST step in the scientific method of problem solving is to: – ? Draw conclusions. – ? Identify the problem. – ? Prepare a written report. – ? Collect data.

n The BEST term to describe the application of scientific principles and new technologies in agriculture is: – ? Farming. – ? Agriscience. – ? Renewable natural resources. – ? Agribusiness.

n Which is an agribusiness related to horticulture? – ? Dairy processor – ? Livestock market – ? Greenhouse dealer – ? Veterinarian

Scientific Method n List in your notebook at least five problems that you think could be solved by science to make our world a better place
