Presentation transcript:

Many students struggle in math because of their lack of understanding place value. You can help your child be successful by assisting them at home using the following reference sheets. Place Value Reference Sheets

Relationships between places are based on multiples of 10.  Moving left across the places, the values are 10 times the position to the right. Example: The magnitude (relative size) of one hundred thousand: 100,000 can be represented as 10 ten thousands. 100,000 can be represented as 100 one thousands. 100,000 can be represented as 1,000 hundreds.

56,789 standard form word form expanded form place value (show 2 different ways to make the number) pictorial form fifty-six thousand, seven hundred eighty-nine 50, , = 56,789 6, , = 56,789 Ten Thousands One Thousands HundredsTensOnes expanded notation (5 x 10,000) + (6 x 1,000) + (7 x 100) + (8 x 10) + (9 x 1) = 56,789

Decomposing (breaking apart) Example #1 standard number: ThHTO ThH TO Example #2 standard number: 473 Are there other ways you can decompose these numbers? X
