Seneca Research Update 2011 Lynne McMullen and Gary Anderson
Outline: Research Overview Current Studies underway Next steps Instructor Refresher Course (2011)
Plan Overview: New Tools under development Database program now called SOLAR Instructor Calibration program Challenge is to satisfy needs of: Industry (efficiency) Transport Canada (safety) Research (quality)
Current Studies: Stream 1 - technical Multi-engine TER Multi-crew Effects Redbird X-wind device Instructor Rating Phase 0 – in analysis stage
Current Studies: Stream 2 – non technical Experience Investigation Survey
Research Strategy: Regulatory Barriers Exemptions – must show public interest AND safety ATO (CARS 407) – difficult to achieve for most… Current strategy avoids this by: Focus on ab initio VFR skills = room to move Multi-engine is not prescriptive = room to move Instructor skills = goal to improve use of simulation
Next Steps (in planning stage): Start development of NEW curriculum; ab inito (PPL) curriculum/ instructor program test at Seneca and partner with similar FTD transfer/test with partners on other FTDs Competency Based learning approaches learner focused material dependent not instructor dependent
Next Steps (in planning stages) : Stream 2 - X/C experience Study; goal to improve non technical skills during ‘time building’ experience phase pre/post test design CRM assessment tools need to be developed
Next Steps: Industry engagement how do we work closer together ? what direction should we be moving to next? where do you need help to increase simulation use? Panel discussion with stake holders?
