Outline Introduction Geologigical Effects on Accelerator Installations Civil Engineering Effects on CERN Installations Summary M. Jones, 28/10/2015 FCC Infrastructure and Operation Meeting

Introduction Presentation assimilated from previous reports and studies LEP / LHC Complex SPS Complex PS LHC Experiments Survey reference point measurements Geodetic reference networks Machine and experiment elements In the SURVEY database since 1980s M. Jones, 28/10/2015 FCC Infrastructure and Operation Meeting

Introduction Analyses Movements between survey measurement campaigns Some deformation analysis Complicated by re-alignments for the accelerators Supports between accelerator elements and tunnel floor can be source of movements Points not directly on the ground Relative differences Some deep reference points for vertical control Some doubts regarding their stability M. CLIC MODULE WORKING GROUP GROUND MOTION STUDIES How to prevent or, at least, anticipate it ? 28 January In LEP area, there are 3 main geological anomalies : The Allondon “Sillon”, The Sergy “Sillon”, The Montfleury “Sillon”. The first one had been taken into account. But the 2 others were not expected… (Ref 2)

CLIC MODULE WORKING GROUP GROUND MOTION STUDIES Geological cuts… 28 January

CLIC MODULE WORKING GROUP GROUND MOTION STUDIES Then… 28 January Allondon Sergy Montfleury Nominal zero : 17mm in point 1 It’s nearly impossible to have a perfectly stable place. Solutions exist (good tunnel floor engineering, good drainage, etc.) but the main is to know the high risk places… (Ref 2)

Expected Cavern Movements No predictions known by SU for the ALICE, LHCb and CMS caverns For LHC, civil engineering predicted that some cavern movements could be expected during/after construction. Predictions for ATLAS Cavern (EDMS: ATC- T-ER-0004) Up to 2 mm settlement after floor concreting Up to 5.5 mm settlement predicted after ATLAS in place (during first 6 months) Of the order of 1 mm uplift per year thereafter M. LEP: monitoring during LHC CE works Since Aug 2000, the sensors indicates mvt in PT1 in V bigger than 4 mm A standard measurement was done and a realignment Very small mvt in R ~ mm
