The Metric System SI (System International)

Metric System Used by every country in the world, except the USA. Used by every country in the world, except the USA. Always used by scientists. Always used by scientists. Also called SI, which is French stands for System International. Also called SI, which is French stands for System International. Based on the number 10, so it’s easy! Measuring Length Length is the distance between two points. Length is the distance between two points. The base unit for length is the meter. The base unit for length is the meter. Meter = m Meter = m We use rulers or meter sticks to find the length of objects. We use rulers or meter sticks to find the length of objects.

Measuring Mass Mass is the amount of matter (stuff) that makes up an object. Mass is the amount of matter (stuff) that makes up an object. The basic unit for mass is the gram. The basic unit for mass is the gram. Gram = g Gram = g We use scales to measure mass. We use scales to measure mass.

Measuring Volume Volume is the amount of space contained in an object. Volume is the amount of space contained in an object. The base unit for volume is the Liter. The base unit for volume is the Liter. Liter = L Liter = L We measure volume with a graduated cylinder or beaker. We measure volume with a graduated cylinder or beaker.

Measuring Temperature Temperature is the measure of the average heat or heat energy Temperature is the measure of the average heat or heat energy The basic unit for temperature is the degree Celcius (°C) The basic unit for temperature is the degree Celcius (°C) 0°C= freezing, 100°C boiling 0°C= freezing, 100°C boiling We use thermometers to measure temperature. We use thermometers to measure temperature.

Let’s review our basic units!!! Length Length Meter (m) Meter (m) Mass Mass Gram (g) Gram (g) Volume Volume Liter (L) Liter (L) Temperature Temperature °C °C We need more accuracy We need more accuracy We can’t measure everything with just basic units We can’t measure everything with just basic units We need prefixes! We need prefixes!

Metric Prefixes Common prefixes from large to small: Common prefixes from large to small: kilo (k) centi (c )- 1/100th milli (m)- 1/1000th We can add these prefixes before any of our basic units for length, mass or volume to make new units that are smaller or bigger!!! Example: killoleter (kL), kilometer (km) centileter (cL), centimeter (cm) milliliter (mL), millimeter (mm)
