1 1 JOHN Chapter 3: v4-6

2 4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or knows Him. 1 JOHN 3: v 4-6

5 lawlessness is anomia - (a, negative, nomos, "law"), is used in a way which indicates the meaning as being lawlessness or wickedness. (Vine) KJV translates anomia as “iniquity” or “unrighteousness” 2 Corinthians 6:14 Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? see Romans 6:19 and 4:19, Matt. 7:23, Direct Object = lawlessness

7 Observation about 1 John 3:4 Sin is harmartia - a missing of the mark (Vine) from verse 4b lawlessness is the definition of sin examples of lawlessness in scripture: Ezekiel 28:1-10 and Isaiah 14:12-17 Genius 3:1-7 L. S. Chafer – “--- that sin is, in its essential character, a lawless departure from the purpose and will of God.” “It (sin) is lawlessness against God and all that His holy character demands”

8 5 You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin. part a know is oida – to have seen or perceived; hence, to know, to have knowledge of, appeared is phaneroo – to make visible, clear, manifest; the true meaning is to uncover, lay bare, reveal. He appeared - is a past point fact given the aorist tense and the indicative mood

9 Hebrews 9:26 Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. 1 John 3:8 the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning.
