Design and Use of Interactive Multimedia Tim Brosnan Module Tutor Introduction and tasks for session 1

Introduction to session 1 In this session we will create the course website guidelines by doing two things: agree the content the site should contain agree criteria for the design of the site The course website can be found at:

Task 1 In groups of 2 or 3, list the content you would wish the website for this course to contain. Do NOT worry (yet) about its organisation In a plenary we will then collate this information.

Agreeing design guidelines We will develop guidelines for the design of the site through three tasks: develop initial guidelines by examining examples of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ sites using these guidelines to evaluate a series of sites all of which have the same purpose comparing your guidelines with those of recognised ‘useability authorities’.

Task 2 In groups of 2 or 3: show each other one website you consider ‘good’ and list why you think this is show each other one website you consider ‘bad’ and list why you think this is You can find examples of ‘bad’ websites at: that suck.com We will collate your sites and reasons

Task 3 The eleven sites listed on the course web-site all have the same aim - to teach children in Year 7 how to write HTML. Your task is to evaluate a number of these using the criteria developed during task 2.course web-site We will discuss both your evaluations and their implications for the course site in the plenary

Task 4 Compare the guidelines you agreed with those on one or more of the ‘usability’ sites. Jacob Neilsen’s site Richard Waller's site Usable web Usability first and with those found in usability research with children:
