Double Negatives Double negatives are when two negative words are used. Only one negative word should be used in a sentence Example: He did not do nothing all day (two negatives) It should be: He did not do anything all day OR He did nothing all day (one negative word) Example negative words include: no, not, nothing, nowhere, no one, nobody, hardly, scarcely, etc. When you use two negative words in a sentence, they cancel each other out, so you are actually saying the opposite of what you mean Example: I don’t want no cheese actually means you want cheese, since you don’t want NO cheese, it means you want cheese.

Reader’s Workshop: Double Negatives As you are reading today, look for a sentence that contains a negative. Copy down the entire sentence in your notebook and underline the negative word. Be ready to share at least one example sentence with the class by the time reading has ended. We will now be reading independently. Remember, reading is thinking, so we must remain silent during this time.
