Presentation transcript:

People have used the power of wind for thousands of years.

Windmills were simple turbines that could produce mechanical energy.

Nowadays farmers use windmills to make a small amount of electricity – enough to power a few farm machines.

To make enough electricity for lots of people, power companies build ‘wind farms’, with lots of wind turbines.

Wind farms are built in flat, open areas where the wind blows at high speed.

Bigger is better – the bigger the wind turbine, the more wind it reaches and the more electricity it produces.

This diagram shows some parts inside a wind turbine: The wind turns the blades, they turn the turbine. The generator makes electricity and sends this power along the lines.

And this video will show you a wind turbine in action.

Definitely! Some schools in Europe and in the USA have their own wind farms!
