Is this Fact or Fiction? Mutations:

What causes mutations?

DNA Mutations caused by… DNA damage from environmental agents such as: – UV light (sunshine) – nuclear radiation – certain chemicals Mistakes that occur when a cell copies its DNA in preparation for cell division.

DNA mutations can also be inherited from parents… If a parent has a mutation in his or her DNA, then the mutation is passed on to his or her children.

Recessive Dwarf gene

2 Headed Snake This albino rat snake, “We”, was living at the World Aquarium and was put up for auction in The buyer paid $150,000.

A German boy, seen here at seven- months old, has a genetic mutation that boosts muscle growth. At age 4 he could lift 17 lb. weights with arms extended, something many adults cannot do.

4 legged birds “Stumpy” the duck from Hampshire Eng. 2007

Alligator with recessive skin gene

Pig with 2 mouths in Liaocheng China, July 2006

Pig with 2 noses, 2 mouths, and 3 eyes in China

Calf has 2 noses, 2 tongues and a single eye socket.

Recessive gene for extra muscles

8 legged frog Quanzhou China, 2007

Transparent frog Created at Hiroshima University for purposes of study.

Hypertrichosis This condition is thought to be responsible for many of the ancient werewolf legends.

Kitten with 2 faces Perth, Australia

“Cy” the Kitten The kitten has a very rare condition (holoprosencephaly) and lived only 1 day. It did not have an eyelid and normally the nose is found above the eye. Oregon, 2005
