A WINNING RESUME: Accomplishments and Qualifications Meets employer’s needs Professional image Quality example of written communication skills Someone who is likable and works well with others YOUR RESUME SHOULD BE ADJUSTED, MODIFIED AND CHANGED EACH TIME IT IS USED TO MEET THE CRITERIA OF THE POSITION

BEFORE YOU START WRITING: Self reflection Research – find a company or job opening you are interested in – use job search sites to get started Necessary to help you determine the content and format of your resume

RESUME SETTUP: (DO NOT USE RESUME TEMPLATE) BLANK WORD DOCUMENT FONT NO SMALLER THAN 11 MARGINS ARE SET AT 1IN, 1IN, 1IN, 1IN – THE SMALLEST MARGINS WOULD BE; TOP.7IN, BOTTOM.5IN, SIDES.7IN A ONE PAGE RESUME IS PREFERRED. DEPENDING ON YOUR LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD YOU MAY FIND IT NECESSARY TO HAVE A TWO PAGE RESUME

RESUME SECTIONS: PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY: ( Recent graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. Excellent research, time management and problem solving skills. Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and consistently meet deadlines. Which Skills to Include in Your Summary: From the example above, you might notice that there are several skills listed. Which skills should you include? Look at the job description or ad. In the qualifications section of the job description or ad, you'll find a list of skills that the employer is seeking. If you're not responding to a specific ad or don't quite know exactly what job you want, then take a few minutes to search job boards online. Look at 2-3 job ads for some jobs in industries you are considering and make a list of the common skills that appear in these ads. Make sure that your summary includes the skills that they have listed. If you don't have all the skills, then only include the ones you do have.

RESUME SECTIONS: (CONTINUED) Work Experience (Experience, Internship)– list of the positions you have held with results-oriented descriptions company name, city, state, dates of employment, job title XYZ Company, Agawam, MAApril 2009 to June 2011 Technical Recruiter Average $150,000 annual billing in job placement fees and exceed standards in generating new client fee agreements Example: (value added) Instead of “service customer accounts…” Use “service up to 100 accounts each month…”

RESUME SECTIONS: (CONTINUE) Related experience: membership, leadership (offices held), awards What do your related experiences say about you? How do they help you get the position? It does not have to be something from the exact field. Maybe it shows off your ability to plan an event, be part of a team or complete tasks. (Alternate headings: volunteer work, community service, certificates earned, activities, professional associations)

Ex: Developed and presented a market analysis of a Fortune 500 company using corporate documents, current events, stock market and global competitors

RESUME SECTIONS:(CONTINUED) Education Start with most recent School, degree, dates of attendance GPA – 3.0 or better can go on your resume (High School) – not needed on resume This section could also include licenses and certifications

REFERENCES REFERENCES: Done on a separate page that has the same heading as your resume Name, title, company, address, phone number and Stay in contact with your references. If you have not been in touch for a few months or longer, connect with them before you use them as a reference.

REVIEW: CONTACT INFORMATION SUMMARY EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS – Core Competencies, Coursework WORK EXPERIENCE RELATED EXPERIENCE OTHER As you form your resume, make sure the important information shows up first! EX: If you want a job milking cows and you have experience volunteering on a farm, move related experience to a higher spot on your resume.
