Acts Class Schedule

tongue – glōssa the "tongues … like as of fire" which appeared at Pentecost; "the tongue," as an organ of speech "a language," coupled with phylē, "the supernatural gift of speaking in another language without its having been learnt;" Vine Tongues in Acts and other NT books

Acts 2:3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. Acts 2:11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God." Acts 2:26 'THEREFORE MY HEART WAS GLAD AND MY TONGUE EXULTED; MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL LIVE IN HOPE; (from PS 16:8-11) Acts 10:46 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered, Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying. The word “glossa” in Acts

Tongues on day of Pentecost – Acts 2:4,6,8 &11 Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. began to speak with other tongues - began to speak in other (different, foreign) languages (tongues) – Amplified Bible Acts 2:6 And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language. language - dialektos - the language or dialect of a country or district - see Acts 1:19, Acts 2:8 and Acts 21:40

Tongues on day of Pentecost (cont.) Acts 2:11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God.“ we hear them in our own tongues we all hear them speaking in our own native tongues – Amplified Bible Observations: Tongues on the day of Pentecost were actual known languages Tongues allowed all assembled to hear God’s word in their native language and dialect

Tongues in Acts 10: Gentiles Pentecost Acts 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. 45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered, For they were hearing them speaking with tongues (glossa) for they were hearing them speaking by means of languages Wuest See Peter’s explanation in Acts 11:17-18

Tongues in Acts 19:1-6 John the Baptist disciples Acts 19:4 Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus." 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying. and they began speaking in languages, and began to prophesy - Wuest “There is no reason to believe Luke used glossa in Acts 19 any differently than in Acts 2 &10. In Acts, tongues consistently referred to recognizable foreign languages. Those involved were proselytes to the Jewish-kingdom message of John the Baptist. Tongues were a confirmation sign to them that the apostolic message they heard was from the Lord.” R. Merryman

“Tongues (glossa) in other NT books 1 Corinthians Chp. 12,13 &14 are the other major sections of the NT addressing tongues “glossa” is the Greek word used in these chapters Tongues at Corinth were for “a sign” as stated in 1 Cor. 14:22 Tongues in Acts were also for “a sign” since the recipients were Jewish – see John 2:18 “Tongues were part of the sign-gifts that confirmed the message of the early church leaders Heb. 2:3-4, Mark 16:20 ” (R. Merryman)

Tongues had a primary & temporary role as a sign, for the Jews & as a ministry to the unbelieving, as revealed in 1 Corinthians 14:20-25 Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature. 21 In the Law it is written, "By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people, and even so they will not listen to Me," says the Lord. 22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe. V. Peterman

When did the church begin? The Church - We believe that the Church, which is now the body and shall be the bride of Christ, is a spiritual organism made up of born-again persons, originated at Pentecost and to be taken up bodily at the rapture. from the HHBC doctrinal statement The following verses give our rational: Acts 11:15-17 "And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as He did upon us at the beginning. 16 "And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' 17 "Therefore if God gave to them the same gift as He gave to us also after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God's way?"

When did the church begin? (cont.) Ephesians 4:4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. “There is no distinction made, however, between how this (Spirit baptism) happens with Jews in Acts 2 (Peter present), Samaritans in Acts 8 (Peter present), Gentiles in Acts 10 (Peter present), or Jews in a Gentile land in Acts 19 (Paul present). Peter presents the death, burial and resurrection of Christ in Acts 2 and in Acts 4:2 & 33, just as Paul presents these truths after Acts 9.” V. Peterman

When did the church begin? (cont.) Remember the book of Acts is a period of transition “The Church, then, was initiated on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2), but not made known to Paul until after he had been given special revelation (Galatians 1:11,12), and Paul was not sent out as an apostle to the Gentiles until later, and most clearly in Acts 13, when he and Barnabas had been sent by the church at Antioch, which was founded initially by the Holy Spirit's work through Peter in Acts 2 (see Acts 11:19, 20)!” V. Peterman See Q&A #13: “When did the church begin” handout

God’s word given – man hears – Holy Spirit convicts Acts 2:36 "Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified." 37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" God’s word given – Acts 2:22 – 36 man hears - now when they heard this Holy Spirit convicts - they were pierced to the heart man’s response - what shall we do? (also see Acts 16:30) See John 16:7 to 11
