The Heresy of Montanism ~150: Montanus of Phrygia - belief in imminent millenium - extreme asceticism & speaking in tongues - considered themselves spiritual & others carnal - opposed to art of any kind, sought martyrdom - Montanus is incarnation of the Holy Spirit - Tertullian late in life. Montanus’ suicide - Condemned by Council of Nicea (325)

: The Apologists Justin Martyr ( ): - Palestinian from Nablus, of pagan parents - emphasized the doctrine of the Logos - earliest antagonist of the heretics - disciple Tatian composed first harmony of the gospels - wrote defenses to Roman senate & Emperor Antoninus - the Eucharist is the real presence of Christ - wrote On the Resurrection as proof of its occurrence Irenaeus of Lyons (d~202): - disciple of Polycarp, migrated to Gaul by preached & debated against gnosticism & Marcionism - made full use of Apostolic writings as Scripture - preserver of early Church Tradition - defender of Apostolic succession
