INSTITUTE FOR MARITIME TECHNOLOGY - RADAR AND EW PERSPECTIVES

IMT RADAR AND EW PERSPECTIVE IMT PROVIDES SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL SUPPORT TO THE SANDF, IN PARTICULAR THE SA NAVY, IN THE MARITIME DOMAIN. THIS SUPPORT INCLUDES: –TEST AND EVALUATION –MEASUREMENT AND ACCEPTANCE –SIMULATION AND MODELLING –RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT –SPECIALIST TRAINING

TEST AND EVALUATION IMT HAS SEVERAL FACILITIES AND A RANGE OF EQUIPMENT TO SUPPORT VARIOUS TYPES OF TEST AND EVALUATION IN A REALISTIC MARITIME ENVIRONMENT. TEST EQUIPMENT/SYSTEMS INCLUDE: –AN X-BAND CONICAL SCAN FIRE CONTROL RADAR –AN X-BAND COMMERCIAL NAVIGATION RADAR –SEVERAL EW TRANSMITTERS AND RECIEIVERS –EXTENSIVE DATA CAPURE FACILITIES –PRECISION GPS POSITION MEASUREMENT SYSTEM –COMMUNICATIONS SUPPORT FOR TRIALS

SIGNATURE MEASUREMENT AND EQUIPMENT PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT

SIGNATURE MEASUREMENT AND EQUIPMENT ACCEPTANCE IMT PROVIDES THE SA NAVY WITH EXTENSIVE SIGNATURE MEASUREMENT AND MANAGEMENT SERVICES, AS WELL AS ASSISTANCE WITH EQUIPMENT ACCEPTANCE MEASUREMENTS. THE FOLLOWING SIGNATURES ARE MEASURED: –RADAR CROSS SECTION (X-BAND LIMITED RESOLUTION) –IR AND OPTICAL IN SEVERAL WAVELENGTHS –ACOUSTIC UNDERWATER –MAGNETIC –ELECTRIC FIELD (SUB-SURFACE) EMC MEASUREMENTS ON SHIP’S ARE ALSO CONDUCTED

SHIP AIR DEFENCE MODELLING AND SIMULATION THE FRIGATE’S RADAR AND EW SUB-SYSTEM PARAMETERS HAVE BEEN: MEASURED, ANALYSED, PROGRAMMED + PLACED UNDER CONFIGURATION CONTROL EW TACTICS ARE BEING MODELLED AGAINST THREAT MISSILES A SHIP AIR DEFENCE MODELLING (SADM) PACKAGE HAS BEEN PROCURED

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IMT ARE PRESENTLY MANAGING THE R&D EFFORT TO DEVELOP AN OFFBOARD ACTIVE DECOY. THIS INVOLVES CONTRACTING AND COOPERATING WITH VARIOUS COMPANIES AND INSTITUTIONS. MAIN ROLE PLAYERS ON THIS PROGRAM ARE: –SAAB AVITRONICS (RF PAYLOAD) –UNIVERSITY OF STELLENBOSCH (UAV CONTROL) –DPSS (SUPPORT IN TRIALS)

CONCLUSION IMT IS INVOLVED WITH A BROAD SPECTRUM OF RADAR AND ELECTRONIC WARFARE ACTIVITIES IN SUPPORT OF THE SA NAVY THE SPECIALISATION ALSO ALLOWS FOR ASSISTANCE TO THE SA NAVY WITH TECHNICAL TRAINING AND PROCUREMENT SUPPORT SERVICES.
