By Taylor Ross EVENTS IN HISTORY

Event 1 Text Evidence of this event: “St. Louis blew sky high on the 10 th day of May.” ( pg. 65, par. 3) Why did the author choose this event? May 10 th was a very important day in Civil War history. Missouri and Illinois were at a constant “ tug-a-war ” with one another. The Union, as a result of this, took control of Missouri. How accurate was this event portrayed? May 10 th, 1861 was not really described thorough enough to be inaccurate. The event was accurate how it was presented because it was mentioned with correct information and didn’t have any false statements.

Event 2 Text Evidence of this event: “ Then came the third week of July, and word from Manassas of the first big battle of war, the Battle of Bull Run.” (pg. 72, par. 6) Why did the author choose this event? The author may have chosen this event because this was a major event in the Civil War. It was the first major battle in Virginia. This was a very crucial lose for the Union and a major victory for the Confederacy. How accurate was this event portrayed? The event was simple but accurate because it stated that this battle was of the state of Virginia and it was the first big battle between the north and south. It also stated that the south had won.

Event 3 Text Evidence of this event: “It was famous, the Battle of Belmont, Missouri. It sparked the career of General U.S. Grant and led him in time to the White House as President.” (pg. 134, par. 3) Why did the author choose this event? The author chose this event because the Battle of Belmont occurred close to the setting of the novel. Also, the character in the book went to fight in the Union army so this was a important battle at the time. It fit the story line perfectly. How accurate was the event portrayed? This event was portrayed okay because it had the correct location mentioned and that General U.S. Grant was the leader for the Union. The incorrect information was that both the north and south claimed victories, but in reality, the Confederacy took this victory.
