Stanford Policy – Faculty ◦ Mission: Promote public good by transferring knowledge  Consulting  Technologies arising from research These activities can give rise to CoI – possible compromise of academic values, research integrity or Stanford’s mission Conflicts may be manageable; e.g. minimize or eliminate Unmanageable = When actions or decisions made in the course of faculty’s University activities are determined by considerations of personal financial gain. Conflict of Commitment - conflicts regarding allocation of time and energies (e.g. consulting) Institutional Conflict of Interest ◦ Licensing Activities ◦ Investments ◦ Gifts Conflict of Interest

Who must disclose? ◦ PI or other participant who has responsibility for design, conduct or reporting of research ◦ (incl. spouse/dom. Partner/dep. child of PI or other participant) What to disclose? ◦ Any relationship; e.g. unpaid consulting, founder or employee ◦ Paid services; e.g. consulting, advisory board, giving talks ◦ Stock or stock options ◦ Gift funds Conflict of Interest certifications - PDRF

Conflict of Interest cert – PDRF (cont’d) When must it be disclosed? ◦ Relationship or $ interest is related to company sponsoring research ◦ Relationship or $ interest indirectly related:  Company supplying product being studied (MTA, drug only CTA)  Purchasing materials, supplies or equipment from company in which there is a relationship  Results of research would be of interest to company in which there is a relationship or Renewal: when there is a new reportable interest

General Obligations re: CoI Faculty: ◦ Submit annual certification of compliance to school Dean  outside professional activities  any financial interests in outside entities that they, and their immediate family members have Faculty, Staff, Post-Docs & Students: ◦ Current or prospective situations which may raise questions of conflict of interest  sponsored research  gifts  human subject protocols  licensing of intellectual property  procurement or  other relationships with outside companies. ◦ Made on ad hoc basis to school dean's office as soon as the individual becomes aware of such situations.
