The Church in Modern Times 1829  To describe how the Church grew after 1829 To explain how Cardinal Wiseman helped the Church become more popular To explain how Vatican II made the Church more welcoming 1829 What happened?

Draw an illustrated & annotated timeline to show the history of the Church from the 12 Apostles, all the way to the Emancipation Act.

The Church in Modern Times 1829-> What order did Catholics did these things, after the Emancipation Act ? Build Catholic Churches Help the Poor Train Priests Build Catholic schools What did Catholics choose to do after the Emancipation ? **Why did they choose to build schools and help the poor first? To make sure Catholic children had a chance of a better future To make sure people were cared for, because people are more important than buildings

Cardinal Nicholas Wiseman, The first Archbishop of London Write out the phrases in bold, replacing the numbers by the number of times they increased by: “From 1829, over a period of 60 years, Cardinal Wiseman: increased the number of priests __ times (from 400 to 1200 ) increased the number of convents of women __ times (from 16 to 160 ) the number of monasteries ___ times (from 0 to 55) He spoke out for good living conditions, cleaning up slums and sewage, preventing disease and providing education. People saw his good work and began to feel more friendly towards Catholics. Anti-Catholic feeling decreased. When he died, the streets of London were packed with the poor people he had helped. What did Cardinal Wiseman do, to make people get over their distrust and fear of Catholics ?

Changes in Rome: Vatican II Complete the speech bubbles for how Vatican II changed things for these people – Mass said in English, not just Latin – Lay people (ordinary Church going Christians) have an important role in the Church – it’s not all about priests – Jesus died for everyone, not just Catholics – People of other faiths have “seeds of truth”, they should be listened to respectfully Lots of Bishops got together in Rome to make the Church more welcoming.. As a woman and a lay person, I was invisible - the Church never used to listen to me. Now I can.... A s a Sikh/ Hindu/ Jew, my Catholic neighbours used to ignore me., thinking my religion was wrong..Now I never learnt Latin at school so I never understood what the priest was saying at Mass. Now... Draw 3 characters and add the speech bubbles to show how life is better for them after the changes of VATICAN II

Choose one of your characters. Read out how Vatican II has changed the way you feel about the Church. See if others can guess who you are. Woman/ Lay person.... Sikh/ Hindu/ Jew/ Moslem English speaker. Never learnt latin
