What is Science?

Variables are the things that are changed in the experiment

3 types of variables:

1. Independent variable is what the scientist changes 1. Independent variable is what the scientist changes. There is only 1 of these.

2. Dependent variable The variable that might change because of what the scientist changes – what is being measured

3. Constant variable The thing(s) that are not changed in experiment -also called control

Ex: If I leave all the lights on all day, then my electric bill will be expensive Independent Variable:_______________ Dependent Variable:________________

If I brush my cat more, then there will be less fur on my furniture Independent Variable:_______________ Dependent Variable:_______________

Elizabeth wanted to test if temperature affected how fast milk goes bad and curdles. She left milk in a room temperature closet, a fridge, and a oven that was turned on low heat. She then measured how rotten the milk was after 10 days. Independent Variable:_______________ Dependent Variable:_______________

Rachel counted the leaves on each of three plants Rachel counted the leaves on each of three plants. Then she put one plant under a blue light bulb, another plant under a yellow light bulb, and a third plant under a white light bulb. She kept all three lights on from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. After 2 months, she counted how many leaves each plant had. Name the independent variable, the dependent variable and 3 constant variables?
