HR Storyboard Reducing Heat Loss Through Root Cause Analysis CHRIS KAPLAN - INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNER

HR2101 Course Description HR2101 is a 16 week course of study designed to prepare the experienced control room operator to use root cause analysis during normal operation of the power plant in order to identify signs of excessive heat loss. The course will focus on root cause analysis and heat loss as fundamentals as well as the practical application of RCA in the student’s own power plant. Operations crews from each power plant will be required to participate in cross plant activities allowing crews to compare system specific issues as a basis for discussing heat loss and root cause analysis.

HR2101 Storyboard Contents Course objectives Students, experts, resources Online learning environment Course outline Prototype implementation plan.

HR2101 Course Objectives At the end of this course, students should be able to: Articulate a definition of Heat Rate Describe impact of Heat Rate on daily operation of the main systems and subsystems in their power plant. Demonstrate success in the application of RCA to their system specific symptoms 8 out of 10 times identifying symptoms that are and are not indicative of Heat Rate.

HR2101 Students Control room operators who have all undergone company quality assurance training and control room simulation series training as well as the mentoring program.

HR2101 Course Outline Lesson 1 - Understanding Heat Rate (Weeks 1-4, 4 weeks) Lesson 2 - Understanding Root Cause Analysis (Weeks 5-8, 3 weeks) Lesson 3 - Reflexive Understanding of Site Specific System Configuration and Dependencies (Weeks 9-13, 5 weeks) Lesson 4 - Apply Root Cause Analysis to System Configuration (weeks 14-16, 3 weeks)

HR2101 Course Outline - Lesson Define heat rate. (Week 1) A1.1a Students will describe heat rate in their own words giving examples from their work history or history in their plant. They will post this definition for comment in conference C1.1 A1.1b Students will be required to respond to at least two of their classmates definitions of heat rate. 1.2 Define excessive heat rate as a ratio of allowable range of input to output for the system (Week 1) A1.2a Group work - discover the allowable operational thresholds for various system components. A1.2b Practice using the mathematical formula for expressing fuel input to power generation output. 1.3 Identify the system components that contribute to heat rate. (Week 2) A1.3a Interviews with plant maintenance supervisors A1.3b Conference discussion. List five system components related to heat loss. Justify.
