Introduction I` ve chosen this novella because the idea of the book seemed to me interesting: the idea of existence of good and evil treats of character in one man which can live independently from each other. It`s a split personality.

Robert Louis Stevenson Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (13 November 1850 – 3 December 1894) was a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist Stevenson`s wife in 1876 and travel writer. Robert Louis Stevenson at the age of seven Stevenson`s tomb The author in 1876A place where Stevenson spent a winter of 1887 with his mother

Stevenson`s works Novels: 1.Treasure Island (1883) 2.The Black Arrow: A Tale of the Two Roses 3.Prince Otto(1885) 4.Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) 5.Kidnapped (1886) 6.The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables (1887) 7.The Master of Ballantrae (1889) 8.The Wrong Box (1889) 9.The Master of Ballantrae (1889) 10.Catriona (1893) 11. Stevenson was writing during the Victorian era

Requiem Under the wide and starry sky, Dig the grave and let me lie. Glad did I live and gladly die, And I laid me down with a will. This be the verse you grave for me: Here he lies where he longed to be; Home is the sailor, home from sea, And the hunter home from the hill.

History of creation Stevenson has long been interested in the idea of the duality of human nature and how to represent the interplay of good and evil into a story. One night in late September or early October 1885, possibly while he was still revising "Markheim," Stevenson had a dream, and on wakening had the intuition for two or three scenes that would appear in the story. And this story`s name is “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”

Characters 1.Dr Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde 2.Dr Hastie Lanyon 3.Mr Gabriel John Utterson 4.Poole 5.Richard Enfield 6.Inspector Newcomen 7.Sir Danvers Carew

Characterization 1.Dr Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde. The dual title of this character is a doctor who has covered up a secret life full of cruel deeds. He feels as if he is constantly battling within himself between what is good and what is evil. After drinking a potion of his own creation, Jekyll turned into a smaller, younger, cruel, evil Edward Hyde, representing the hidden side of Dr Jekyll's nature. 2.Dr Hastie Lanyon was former friend of Jekyll, who disagrees with his "scientific" concepts. He was the first person to whom Hyde's identity opened his secret. 3.Mr Gabriel John Utterson was a lawyer and loyal friend of Jekyll, who tried to know the truth during the whole novel. 4.Poole was Jekyll`s servant and served him faithfully. Yet events finally drive him into joining forces with Utterson to discover the truth. 5.Sir Danvers Carew was a kind old man and important member of Parliament. He was killed in the streets of night London by Mr Hyde.

Settings It is about a London lawyer named Gabriel John Utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr Henry Jekyll and the misanthropic Mr Edward Hyde. The action happened in 19 th century in London.

Climax More and more often Dr Jekyll turned into Mr Hyde without potion. He couldn`t control it. Soon he spent all powders for this drink. And Henry Jekyll decided to tell the truth his good friend John Utterson, writing him a letter. But Utterson read the one just after Jekyll`s death where he understood who had been Edward Hyde and why Henry had created him.

Adaptations of «The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde» There are dozens of stage and film adaptations of the novella; over 123 film versions alone, not including stage and radio versions. However, there have been no major adaptations to date that remain faithful to Stevenson's original. In addition, almost all adaptations introduce a romantic element which does not exist in the original story.

Screen versions 1913 —Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde( the USA) Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde(the USA) 1931 — Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde(the USA) 1941 — Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde(the USA) 1947 —Dr Jekyll and Mr Mouse( cartoon film, the USA) 1960 — Two faces of Dr Jekyll(the UK) 1968 — Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde(the USA) 1971 —Dr Jekyll and sister Hyde(the UK) 1982 — Jekyll and Hyde… Again together(the USA) 1985 —Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde(SSSR) 1990 —Jekyll and Hyde(the USA, the UK) 1999 — Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde(Canada, Australia) 2002 —Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde(the UK) 2002 — Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde(the USA) Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde( play, Russia) 2008 — Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde(Canada) and others.

Conclusion I think that a split personality is real but it is always happening inside us. The man should fight for himself. And we should try to be better than we are.

The end Thanks for attention
