Table of contents Pure and Applied science Inferences Fair tests IV/DV/CV Observations Conclusions Bar/line graphs Qualitative/quantitative statements Mean/median/mode Hypothesis/theory Control/experimental groups

Pure and Applied science Pure science : observation of natural phenomena solely for the discovery of unknown laws relating to facts Applied science: the discipline dealing with the art or science of applying scientific knowledge to practical problems Such as medicines

Inferences & Fair tests What is a inference ? What is a Fair test? Answer a educated guess about the surroundings Example there is a computer so it’s the computer room. A fair test is a test carried out under fair conditions. Example when testing drinks on how the react to salt the temperature of the room has to stay the same

Variables IV: Independent Variable The variable that is changed for an experiment DV: Dependent Variable The variable that doesn’t change for an experiment Cv: the consent variableThe ending variable/outcome variable

Observations/Conclusions Observations Anything you notice with your senses such as sight or touch Exp the monitor is black. Conclusions The end of the experiment and all the written data is proven right or wrong.

Graphs A line graph is a graph that uses points to show information. And it mainly deals with time A bar graph is a graph that is used when time is not a factor

Statements Qualitative statement A statement which does not deal with numbers ExampleStudents are wearing blue shirts. Quantitive statement A statement that deals with numbers. ExampleEight students are sick today.

Math terms in science Mean- The average of the numbers Example answer 3 Mode – The most common/ used number. Example – Answer is 4 Median – The middle number Example – answer 3

Hypothesis/Theories Hypothesis – The question part of the method of science, a explanation for a phenomenon Example The 3 green leaves turn brown because the dry up. Theories- Is a hypothesis that has been tested many times by different people. Example’s the Theory of evolution Big bang theory

Groups Controlled group Is the group that stays the same is not altered. Example- the plant that stays outside in the garden. Compared to the plant indoors that is in shade and constant temperature changes. Experimental group The group that is altered during the experiment. Example- the plant indoors is in the shade and the temperature is changing from cold to hot every day.
