Presentation transcript:

Earthworm Dissection This is the “anterior” end. (You would say it’s the head, or the front.) It’s the part you’ll be concentrating on in the dissection.

In a perfect world, this is what your dissected worm would look like….

But it’s not a perfect world, so let’s go over some things that will help you come a little bit closer to perfection…. 

(going down the left-hand side of the paper) This dissecting kit should look familiar to you. Please turn over worksheet 26 (to the blank side) and label it with A. B. C. D. E. (going down the left-hand side of the paper)

Now on the back of worksheet 26, next to the letters D E Now on the back of worksheet 26, next to the letters you just wrote, please tell me the names of each of the above things found in your dissecting kit. (Use the internet if you forgot their names!) Next to that, write what the tool is used for (keep it short).

YOU CAN USE ONE WORD TO DEFINE EACH OF THEM (if you want)! 1. Posterior 2. Anterior 3. Dorsal 4. Ventral Below the parts of your dissecting kit (on the back of worksheet 26, where you just wrote A-E), please explain what the four words above mean. YOU CAN USE ONE WORD TO DEFINE EACH OF THEM (if you want)!

Look at the front of worksheet 26. This is more like what you’re going see when you dissect your worm: (Kind of messy, huh?...) Look at the front of worksheet 26. Use the word bank below to complete #1-6. (Do not forget to explain what each part does on the lines below the picture!) setae crop gizzard aortic arches (hearts) nerve cord intestine

Now please complete the rest of worksheet 26 (#7-10). If you’d like to see another leech video (#7), try this one: http://www.discovery.com/tv-shows/other-shows/videos/nasty-by-nature-giant-bloodsucking-leach.htm If you need a clue for #9, here it is:

You must complete it or you will not be allowed to dissect! Whatever you don’t finish on page 26 will be homework tonight. You must complete it or you will not be allowed to dissect! When you are finished with the worksheet, please watch the below video. (NOW you may plug in your headphones.) DO NOT WATCH IT UNTIL YOU’RE FINISHED WITH THE WORKSHEET (OR MS. MANKOSKI GIVES YOU PERMISSION TO WATCH). Thank you.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2BY0hRUA9E (If you have extra time after watching the video, go to the next slide. It has a couple of interactive websites for you to try.)

And for the more mature among you… If you finish before your classmates, check these out…. Squirmin’ Herman http://urbanext.illinois.edu/worms/anatomy/ And for the more mature among you…  http://biog-1101-1104.bio.cornell.edu/BioG101_104/tutorials/animals/earthworm.html
