Physical Education Licensure talk Oct 23, 2015, 10:30 a.m. 121A Freer Hall

– COTE introduction Oversee all things related to licensure Past – CBC and Bloodborne Pathogen training, etc. Here today to talk about process of actually getting licensed. Obtain license as soon as you can!!!!- regardless of other plans (grad school, Peace Corp, etc). – Only protected against program changes for 1 year – Not protected at all against ISBE changes – Other state certification will likely hinge on Illinois licensure first.

Applying for licensure: Log onto your student portal ( Example: ed-blutarsky (Bluto) Click on “Licensure Application” Will ask if your are registered for or previously done student teaching. – If you have to answer no, Please do not proceed. – Click on “Click here to fill out your application request.” address-Recommend you use your most reliable-regular account. Don’t use your UIUC account as it will go away.

Phone number Degree period Major License Endorsements – May request as many as you wish to be considered for (but please use some common sense) Comments: Provide important information regarding endorsements such as pending transfer coursework, tests, etc.

You will all be endorsed in Physical Education (K-12). To teach any other subject (besides PE) at the middle grade, you must complete the middle grade coursework and meet the content requirements for the endorsement. H.S. Health Education endorsement requires 24 hours of coursework, 12 hours at the 300+ level, and pass the ICTS content test in Health Education – Signature (must “sign” stating you understand) (check mark to the side) Must submit – Once you sign, you can’t go back. Contact us if you need to modify/correct something.

The next day, you should receive an which says the COTE has received your application. You CAN submit application even if you haven’t yet passed all tests (just need to be registered for student teaching). I will complete an audit based on DARS report (which YOU should also run) or your graduate audit we completed earlier. – Problems? Will either contact you or records officer. If contacted, it’s important you respond.

Nothing missing? Will put application in pending file until end of spring or summer term Additional endorsements? We will send Endorsement to address you put on form. Contact us if something is inaccurate or missing. End of final semester processing. – EFE hours (at least 80). (Should check Student portal for accuracy) – Student Teaching Time Reports Be accurate and fairly descriptive. Only record we will have of your Student teaching (directions on student portal).

– Safety Training – Mandated Reporter Training acknowledgement – Departmental Recommendation Should come automatically from Kinesiology Dept if you meet all responsibilities – Tests Physical Education Content test EdTPA – Grades – Degree (must appear on transcripts!!!) – Spring graduates (late May or June 2015) – If you plan to take a summer job, contact your records officer to request your degree appear on the first degree post – Summer grads (August, 2015) – Contact your records officer to request your degree appear on the first degree post.

Recommending you to ISBE: – We will contact you at address you provided. – We will provide a link to ISBE website where you will go to claim your license. – Follow steps. Be prepared to pay by credit card ISBE will follow up by sending an with a link where you will go to register your license – (District where you have a job or where you live or permanent address) – If you don’t register it, after 6 months it will lapse.

ISBE is no longer providing paper copies of license – Will need to make a screen shot of license – Anyone can go into ELIS/Educator credentials, go into “Public Search” and, using your first and last name, verify your credentials TESTING (more information) – Two tests: Content test in Physical Education (144) Must be passed before student teaching (state law) EdTPA

– Optional test Health Education (142) – required for the H.S. Health Ed endorsement All high school and foreign language endorsements require a test. Be sure you request test scores be sent to Illinois Be sure your SSN is accurate (errors may delay licensure). Keep test scores forever (or longer)- May need them later

Renewing your license Important! The window for renewing is getting smaller-don’t let license lapse. – Can renew online through ISBE website (same site where you will claim your license). Licensure in other states – Likely will require licensure in Illinois first – Other states may have program verification form. Send form to COTE to fill out. – Contact information is on our website under “Links” in Certification Map Teacher Certification Offices-addresses, etc. – If you ask us about licensure in other states, this is where we’ll likely refer you

Changes Certificate is now a “Professional Educator License” – Endorsed in Physical Education (K-12) “Types” have gone away (You won’t receive a type-10 license) “Initial”, “standard”, and “Nat’l Board Certification” has gone away Need to renew every 5 fiscal years. Don’t forget or it will become “lapsed.”

Highly Qualified A Federal “No Child Left Behind” definition You will be “highly qualified” in Physical Education by two means: – Major – Passing the content test in Physical Education More information on “Highly Qualified” in FAQ section of our website.
