Who Started 2D design...Didn’t everybody ? The programme that schools use is called : TechSoft UK Ltd was founded in the mid 1980s and has established itself as the market leading supplier of CAD and CAD/CAM systems (Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacture) to schools in the UK.

Designs to Inspire and Make Now if everyone would grab a computer and Log in Start In programme search Put 2D Design: Fingers crossed this brings a clear page

2D Design Activities

Tools For Snowflake Activity in 2D Design Setup – Drawing - Layout Select Gridlock Straight line Zoom Contour Transform Delete Line colour Grouping

One at a Time… Straight line tool Gridlock on Grouping Select all Edit - Group

Transform Angle Number of repeats Centre of rotation (Rotate the selected object) If I only wanted 4 prongs, what is the angle of rotation? Number of repeats? Angle Number of repeats Centre of rotation

Contour Delete Colour line

Useful Tools and Other Activities Flip (left/right) Copy Orientation Re-size Rotate Upside down Move Copy

Useful Tools and Other Activities Text Delete between two intersections Isometric

What next… Laser cutter Plotter cutter Black/red: cutting/engraving lines Most materials Plotter cutter Up to thick card

Cross-Curricular Applications Science (Chemistry) Crystalline structure Rocks/minerals Maths Lines of symmetry/mirror symmetry Pattern/repetition Angles Geometry/shapes Geography Weather Art/Design Jewellery, decorative body pieces

Pro’s and Con’s of Using 2D in Schools Cheap to buy Not industry standard ICT Skills No fancy tools Cross curricular usages Rely on computer to draw Easy to use Accessible

Quiz Name 3 tools used to create a snowflake in 2D design? To make a five pronged snowflake what is the angle of rotation? Number of repeats? Give two examples of cross-curricular applications of the snowflake activity.

Packaging Why packaging? Why boxes? Can you think of examples? Isometric – making a 3D object in 2 dimensions. Maths – geometry, numeracy Food Tech – practical usage Graphics / Product design Marketing/advertising

Tools Gridlock on (1cm spacing default) Line Tab placements

Make your box Print out net Cut/glue

Usage & Extensions Pyramid net – Toblerone Rectangle net Materials used to make the box -sustainable/recyclable boxes. Egg box design Toys – jack in the box

Further Possibilities of 2D Design

You can use your 2D design to print out onto special paper and transfer your image onto a T-shirt.

Techsoft.co.uk Think of 2D design as your drawing board. From here you can bring your design alive and move them into the real world.

Printroot.com As demonstrated earlier, simple packaging nets can be formed and sent to be printed.

Tessellation. This is where a single shape is fitted together and repeated many times. Used in the packaging process to reduce waste, thereby reducing costs and maximizing output.

Techsoft.co.uk CAD/CAM Output A key feature of 2D Design V2 is the high level of integration that has been built in between the output device and the drawing stages of design. When starting a drawing you will typically set your page size to suit the machine you will be using - at its simplest level this means that the design will ‘fit’ and you can position the job accurately on the work area, but there is more to it than that. Once set, all the particular features of that machine become available so, for example, you can add registration marks ready for print-and-cut using knife-cutting machines and you will see a dialog box to set up the rotary table for a LaserCAM. When ready to output to many CAD/CAM devices and all our Roland, Graphtec and LaserCAM machines, there is one simple machine-specific dialog box to deal with and no tedious post-processing to confuse matters.

Solid Works Solid works is the 3D big brother of 2D Design. Aimed at Industry and Professionals. Able to do more detailed designs and test real world conditions so you get it right before you build it. Photorealistic renderings, automatic interference and collision detection make sure all parts fit together before you build a physical prototype thus reducing cost and speeding up the design process to market.
