Bulletin n o. 9 TRAVEL’S KIT Raimundo PRESENTATION For force of recording out of house, in case of lecture or for to assist some out friend of my laboratory in São Paulo, I ended up developing a simplified technique of recording. Taking advantage of the hook of the Bulletin 8, in which we mentioned that we accomplished the experiments in the city of Santos, I take advantage of to detail how they happened the recordings. The same process had already been used with success in Aracaju, Piauí, Curitiba and other cities where I was. There is to wonder then, because that system was not approached in our book “Gravando Vozes do Alem" (“Recording Voices of the Beyond”), since it is simpler. It is that that we will answer in this Bulletin, among other things. A sturdy hug of Sonia Rinaldi IPATI – Institute of Advanced Researches in ITC In our book “Recording Voices of the Beyond” we detailed the current technique that used at our laboratory. But to record out, there is to be reduced the size of everything, and consequently to alter the technique. They are part of ours “trip kit”: a notebook, double microphone, ear phone, digital voice recorder and an acoustic mini-insulator.

We see here a “little cave” that serves as acoustic isolation made with the use of polyurethane foam. She is equal to the “witch's cap” described in details in the book, don't just remain how to do, but your purpose. Inside of the “little cave” it will be ours “background noise” stored in the digital audio recorder, that offers the advantage of the quality of the sound and very compact size. Above a digital voice recorder, that can be of any mark and model. Those digital recorders are much more complex than the old of cassette tape, because they seem a super-mini- computer, it generates directories, it has memory, it organizes files, etc... It overcomes in quality the magnetic tape ones, in addition, we observed that them own they were capable of to impregnate itself with The trans- contacts, so that at each certain time, the background noise was useless. To increase the potency of a common microphone, it can be used two. It is fundamental to unite them with adhesive tape (type masking tape) to avoid their attrition in the hand of the operator, because that, by itself, would already generate inconvenient sounds. I make to notice that the position of “shell” (ill. above) it is more convenient than the straight line form, side by side.

As we will have 2 microphone cables, there is to join the plugs uniting them in a “device in Y”. Details to the right and left. The “technical simplification” it stay due to the Background Noise, that instead of leaving of 2 sources (ideally, 2 Cd-players) it will leave of an alone source, in other words, of our digital voice recorder. But, in that background noise there is to have TWO mixed sources and already recorded, in other words, it is not because you will use only one output sound that can use A VOICE instead of two. The modulation of A VOICE is still almost impossible. There is to use two recordings already added and unified in the voice recorder. WHAT CHANGES: The quality of the ear phone is fundamental and the difference of your capacity is such that you can hear a contact perfectly with a good one and don't hear it with one of low price. That is an item in which should not be saved

THE PROCESS: I make to remind that I began the tests for improvement of the voices using up to 19 activated equipments, they were radios that I bought in street vendors, TV creaking, tape recorders, Cd-players, everything playing together. But, little by little I noticed that as larger the number of sources, more the voice came weak and with shrill sound. I started to reduce the equipments until arriving to 3 Cd-players, and I used for a good time, until taking a risk with 2. And it worked better! In other words, as less sources, less shrill sound. But, although the ideal then would be to record with One CD of background noise, it happens that seems infinitely difficult for them “they break” those molecules and to reorganize them. To the that everything indicates, the sound when confronting (for the output sound of 4 boxes in cross form – vide book) it facilitates that break and the answers appear high and clear. But in the Travel's Kit, there is to improvise. Therefore, the solution was to record previously in the Digital Recorder, some couple of Cd of traditional background noise, example, two voices of “old woman”, being a CD with phonemes and other with disassembled text (see book). The 2 sounds recorded added, it starts then to be our Background Noise for trips. For the encounter in Santos took some tape sound “added” in the tape recorder. To speak with Alexandre's father, we used two Voices of “gentleman” with phonemes + text. Before beginning the recording, we made all the present people hear the background noise that we would use, so that they were sure that there was not there any recorded word, much less a sentence. When all heard and they confirmed that anything there in that background noise of the tape recorder it formed any word, we began the Experiment, and soon in the beginning the Voices appeared, surprising the visitors. Is the permanent use of that process CONVENIENT? No. The unification of the noise doesn't allow the sound to be Random or Aleatoric, thing that happens when you use 2 Cd as sources. The general process is like exactly described in the book, with the difference that in the trip kit eliminated the 2 Cd-players, the 4 sound boxes, witch's hat and we changed for everything portable. The quality can lose a little bit, but the phenomenon is guaranteed in any situation.
