Social Entrepreneurship in The USA  The term Social Entrepreneurship is fairly new in the US but the history is significant.  Social Entrepreneurship involves efforts to solve social problems through entrepreneurial approaches.  Entrepreneurship is a “mindset” that pursues opportunity through innovative approaches, entrepreneurial determination and scalable strategies.  The Channeling of Innovation and Creativity to generate Value in Communities – Economic, Social and Intellectual Value  Benjamin Franklin, Susan B. Summary of Social Entrepreneurship Education in the USA  Social Entrepreneurship Curriculum is Expanding at a Rapid Rate  The Main Reason is Demand from Students seeking careers with Purpose and Meaning  University Leaders (Deans, Dept. Chairs) are interested in faculty who are Certified to teach Social Entrepreneurship  University Professors are interested in Content Ready curriculum that is High Quality and reduces course development time  The Majority of Non-Profit Organizations in the US are seeking sustainability models based on a Revenue Model (Earned Income)  Social Entrepreneurship combines the best of Entrepreneurship and Social Good

USASBE The Largest Faculty Organization Dedicated to Entrepreneurship in the US  USASBE - Over 1,200 members from Colleges and Universities across the US.  Built on Four Pillars  Education  Research  Outreach  Public Policy  Annual Conference – San Diego California January 8-12

Social Entrepreneurship Fastest Growing Area in Entrepreneurship in American Colleges and Universities  USASBE Certificate in Social Entrepreneurship – Launched in 2012  Two Main Tracks – Teaching Certificate and Social Venture Certificate  Teaching Certificate – Requires a Syllabus to Complete  Social Venture – Requires a Business Plan for a Social Venture  Majority of Certificate Completions are Faculty Interested in Creating a Social Entrepreneurship Course

Certificate Status To Date  Participants enter the process in groups (cohorts)  Cohort #7 Started at GWU in October with 11 participants  75 participants have signed up for the program – 60 have completed the certificate  58 completed with a Teaching Certificate 2 with Business Ventures  An Estimated 3,000 Students per year take SE courses offered by Certificate Graduates
