1.2 – MORE COMPLEX WORD PROBLEMS Algebra 1

Do Now John works at an ice cream shop scooping ice cream. Fifteen less than three times his hourly wage is equal to half his hourly wage plus forty. What is John’s hourly wage?

Homework Any specific struggles/questions?

Example One Brianne’s golf score is eight more than Tim’s score. The sum of their scores is ninety-six. Find Brianne’s golf score.

Example Two Shirley is going to have the exterior of her home painted. Tim’s painting charges $250 plus $14.00 per hour. Colorful Paints charges $22 per hour. How many hours would the job need to be for both companies’ cost to be equal?

You Try! Tracey is looking at two different travel agencies to plan her vacation. ABC Travel offers a plane ticket for $295 and a rental car for $39 per day. M & N Travel offers a plane ticket for $350 and a rental car for $33 per day. After how many days will both rental costs be equal?

Definitions Area of a rectangle: Area of a square: Perimeter of an object: Equilateral Triangle:

Example Three: Three times the perimeter of a square is equal to the perimeter of an equilateral triangle. The side of the square is 4x-6 inches if the side of the triangle is x inches. What is the area of the square?

Example Four: A rectangle has a perimeter of 32 inches, and the length is 4 inches more than the width. Find the area of this rectangle.

You Try!

Example Five:

Practice Problems Try some on your own/in small groups As always don’t hesitate to ask me questions if you are confused.
