November 2004 SFEU Supporting Children’s Rights and Entitlements Outcome One Explain the importance of children’s rights and entitlements

Human Rights  Universal  Develop and change over time  Are influenced by changing views in society  Try to ensure that everyone is treated with dignity and respect  Cover all aspects of our lives

Rights  Ensure we survive, develop and protect us from harm  Mean others must involve us in decision making and include us in matters which affect us  Are different from needs and wants

Responsibilities  With the idea of rights for everyone in society comes the notion of responsibilities  So, if we have a right to be treated with respect we have a responsibility to treat others with respect

What do we mean by ‘rights’? There are different types of rights  Moral Rights  Legal Rights  Political Rights  Economic Rights  Cultural Rights

History of Human Rights  Magna Carta (1215)  Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948)  The Human Rights Act (Britain) 1998  UN Declaration on the Rights of The Child (1948)  UN Convention on The Rights of The Child  (1989)
