Sugar substitutes

ASPARTAME (APM)  It’s an organic chemical compound with the molecular formula: C 14 H 18 O 5 N 2, it belongs to the group of peptide esters.  Occurrence: drinks without sugar, dietary dairy products, fruit juices without sugar, sugar-free desserts, the confectionery products, non- alcoholic beer, jams, marmalades, mustards, jellies, sauces, canned fish, breads, cereals.  Effects on the body: it can cause leukemia, diseases of the nervous system, lung cancer, breast cancer. It’s not recommended for people with sensitive digestive tracts.

SACCHARIN  It’s an organic chemical compound with the molecular formula C 7 H 5 NO 3 S, imide acid, o-sulfobenzoic, used as an artificial sweetener.  Occurrence: drinks without sugar, dietary dairy products, fruit juices without sugar, sugar-free desserts, the confectionery products, non- alcoholic beer, jams, marmalades, mustards, jellies, sauces, canned fish, breads, cereals.  Effects on the body: it may cause bladder cancer.

Possible substitutes of ASPARTAME and SACCHARIN

STEVIA  Natural, healthy substitute of sugar and all artificial sweeteners. Studies have shown the beneficial effects of stevia in hypertension and diabetes diseases.  We can purchase it in the form of tablets, concentrate, powder or dried.

Xylitol  It’s a natural sweetener extracted from birch, an alternative to sugar.  It’s recommended for diabetics.  It does not cause tooth decay.  It’s completely safe.

Maltitol  The organic compound from the group of sugar alcohols, used as a sweetener.  It’s extracted from natural grains.  Compared to other sugar substitutes it is less caloric and minimizes the risk of caries.  It is a natural ingredient – doesn’t contain artificial additives.  It does not change properties due to temperature, in contrast to artificial sweeteners such as aspartame or saccharin, can therefore be used as a sugar substitute in cooking or baking process.  It is safe for people with celiac disease or lactose intolerance.

Honey  It’s a natural sweet food product produced by bees.  It’s a valuable nutritional product, especially for hard-working people. It should be included in the diet for: athletes, mountaineers, divers.  It lowers blood pressure, improves blood circulation, protects the liver, increases natural immunity.

We have got just one health – we should take care of it!  Natural sweeteners shown in this presentation can replace artificial sweeteners. They are not harmful and have often got positive influence on our body.
