ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Andrew Turner Economics 9 th Grade Issues with Oil in the Present and Future

ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Goals: Students will be able to understand the impact that scarcity has on the economy by researching and creating a presentation on fuel and the economy. Students will be able to explain how energy consumption has and will continue to impact the economy, and they will be able to draw their own conclusions from this material. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will have to know what fuel resources are available, how they are used, and their potential impact on the economy. Process/Skills: Students will have to research and create their own unique products during this lesson. They will work together and on their own to research information and interpret their own understanding of the material Values/Dispositions: Students will learn about the impact of scarcity and the environment on the economy. With this understanding they will become well informed citizens on the energy crisis that is currently facing our economy.

ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Rationale: This lesson will teach students about the impact that scarcity has on the economy. Students will learn this through studying the impact that energy consumption has had on the economy. They will be able to explain the relationship between scarcity and the economy, and they will be able to offer solutions on how to solve this issue. Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards Goal 15: B. Understand that scarcity necessitates choices by consumers. 15.B.4b Analyze the impact of current events (e.g., weather/natural disasters, wars) on consumer prices. National – NCSS Themes Standard 1: Scarcity Productive resources are limited. Therefore, people cannot have all the goods and services they want; as a result, they must choose some things and give up others.

Logical/Mathematical

Logical/Mathematical Students will study graphs that show oil output and usage over the past few decades and predict these numbers in the future. Students will create their own graph based on these numbers and they will make a guess on when they believe that oil will no longer be a viable resources if the trend continues.

Body/Kinesthetic

Body/Kinesthetic As a class the students will demonstrate oil consumption based on the graphs that they have studied. They will start as single group known as “Oil Remaining” and over time they will move to the “Oil Used” group. This activity will demonstrate to students how oil has been consumed over time.

Intrapersonal

Intrapersonal The students will watch a video and learn about how oil influences the economy. Through this they will learn about the role that scarcity plays in our economy. Students will be given time to write an entry in their journal about what they know and have learned about oil and scarcity so far in our lesson.

Naturalistic

Naturalistic Students will be split into groups, and each group will be assigned a fuel resource. They will determine how this resource could be used and whether they believe it is a viable alternative for the future of energy.

Interpersonal

Interpersonal Students will work together on the fuel resource activity by researching and discussing their topic together. By working as a group students will gain a deep understanding of their resource and the impact that it could have on the economy.

Visual/Spatial

Visual/Spatial Each group will learn about their resource and create a video, brochure, poster, or powerpoint based on what they have found. Students will be given a rubric on what is expected of them during this activity. When they are finished they will present their product to the class.

Verbal/Linguistic

Verbal/Linguistic Students will present their fuel source to the class. Following each groups presentation the class will discuss which fuel source they view as the most viable. The class will also discuss the role that scarcity has played in shaping our economy and how these resources might change it.

Musical/Rhythmic

Musical/Rhythmic After presenting, each will write a song about their resource detailing what it is, how it could be used, and whether or not is a viable alternative.

ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Visual Learning and Assessment: Visual Learning, Assessment, and Online Resources: Assessment: 1. Students will be assessed based on their presentation to the class. Students will have a rubric to guide them while they create their product so they will know what is expected of them Online Resources: 1.
