SMART GOALS  S = Specific  M = Measurable  A = Attainable  R = Relevant  T = Time Bound

SMART GOALS  S MART GOALS – SPECIFIC  WHAT are you going to do? Use action words such as  Direct  Organize  Coordinate  Lead  Develop  Plan  Build

SMART GOALS  S MART GOALS – SPECIFIC  Why is it important to do at this time? What do you want to specifically want to accomplish  Behaviors  Actions  Outcomes

SMART GOALS  S MART GOALS – SPECIFIC  HOW are you going to do it? By doing  X  Y  Z

SMART GOALS  S M ART GOALS – MEASURABLE “If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it”  There must be a practical and reliable way to measure accomplishing the goal  Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress and completion of the goal

SMART GOALS  SM A RT GOALS – ATTAINABLE  A goal needs to be a slight stretch  It must be achievable, but  It should require a real commitment to get done  Setting Attainable goals helps keep people motivated

SMART GOALS  SMA R T GOALS – RELEVANT  The GOAL must be important to the organization and in alignment with it’s mission and vision  The persons for which the goal is set must have the ability to make the change or impact

SMART GOALS  SMAR T GOALS – TIME BOUND  Time Bound includes a START as well as an END date

SMART GOALS  Clarification point:  Setting goals is not planning a project  Beware of getting caught up in the tactical details  Stay on point, one goal, and only one goal at a time  Don’t set goals that have an automatic result

SMART GOALS - Samples  Membership: By December 2014, we will increase existing designer membership by 10 through offering one CEU and one program that are both affordable and designed focused.

SMART GOALS - Samples  Committee development: Starting in January 2014 and completing in March 2014, establish one committee member per director, who is not another board member, identified through member interest survey by: a) directors targeting current membership base and, b) membership director reaching out to new members within one month of joining.

SMART GOALS - Samples  Programming events: Starting in January 2014 and completing in December 2014, establish one committee member/event captain per event, identified on a per event basis.  Student involvement: Between January 2014 and the end of the March 2014, we will increase student awareness of NEWH by conducting at a minimum of four school presentations, to increase exposure in order to receive 40 student scholarship applications.
