Color An Element of Art made up of three properties—hue, value and intensity
Line An Element of Art defined by a point moving in space. Line may be two or three-dimensional, descriptive, implied or abstract
Shape An Element of Art that is two dimensional, flat or limited to height and width
Tone An Element of Art that describes the amount of lightness or darkness (shade) on an object from a light source.
Form An Element of Art that is three dimensional and encloses volume; includes height, width and depth. Form can be geometric or free flowing
Texture An Element of Art that refers to the way things feel, or look as if they might feel if touched
Composition An Element of Art that describes the different parts of an artwork and how it is created.
Hue Name given to a color
Value How dark or light a hue is. A colour's value changes when white or black is added to it
Intensity A color's quality of brightness and purity. High intensity colors are strong and bright, low intensity colors are faint and dull.
Geometric The term used to describe man-made common shapes and solids—square, rectangle, triangle, cube, pyramid, etc…
Organic The term used to describe naturally occurring shapes—human, flora, fauna and landscapes
Painting The act of covering in paint, as in oils, tempera, acrylic, gouache or watercolour an image or object
Drawing A sketch, plan, or design made with pen, pencil, or crayon.
Media Refers to the type of material an artwork is created from—paint, pastel, clay, ink, etc….
Pattern An arrangement of repeated decorative motifs to create a design
Pastel A type of media used to create artworks. There are two main types—oil and chalk pastels
Watercolor A type of paint that is translucent (see through) when applied to an artwork
Collage An arrangement of shapes and objects on an artwork that are usually glued in place
Design A plan, sketch or preliminary drawing that shows the arrangement of the parts of an artistic or decorative piece of work
