Simple Machines Fifth Grade Science

SIMPLE MACHINE- is a tool that makes work easier and has few or no moving parts

Types of Simple Machines:

Pulleys ► A pulley- uses grooved wheels and a rope to raise, lower, and move a load  For example: window blinds, crane

pulley

Lever- a stiff bar that rests on a middle support Can you think of an example of a lever?

See Saw

Wedge- has at least one slanted side that ends in a sharp edge An axe blade is a wedge that cuts material apart.

Wheel Axle A wheel with a rod through its center lifts or moves loads Wheel and Axle

Inclined Plane- a slanted surface It is much easier to move an object up an inclined plane than straight up

Screw- an inclined plane that is wrapped around a pole Screws hold things together and can be used to lift materials.

Can you think of any simple machines that you see everyday? ► Wheels on backpacks and suitcases ► Ramps into truck beds ► Screws in desk legs How are each of these simple machines? What problems are they solving?
