Similes and Metaphors Poetry Devices

Simile  A comparison using like or as  His feet were as big as boats.

Willow and Ginkgo Eve Merriam The willow is like an etching, Fine-lined against the sky. The ginkgo is like a crude sketch, Hardly worthy to be signed. The willow’s music is like a soprano, Delicate and thin. The ginkgo’s tune is like a chorus With everyone joining in. The willow is sleek as a velvet-nosed calf; The ginkgo is leathery as an old bull. The willow’s branches are like silken thread; The ginkgo’s like stubby rough wool.

Metaphor  A metaphor states that one thing is something else. It is a comparison, but it does NOT use like or as to make the comparison.  Her hair is silk.

What is Gold? Hailstones and Halibut Bones by Mary O’Neill Gold is a metal Gold is a ring Gold is a very Beautiful thing. Gold is the sunshine Light and thin Warm as a muffin On your skin. Gold is the moon Gold are the stars; Jupiter, Venus Saturn and Mars, Gold is the color of Clover honey Gold is a certain Kind of money. Gold is alive In a flickering fish That lives its life In a crystal dish. Gold is the answer To many a wish. Gold is feeling Like a king It’s like having the most Of everything— Long time ago I was told Yellow’s mother’s name Is gold…

Class Discussion  What is similar about these two items? Can you make a sentence that compares these two items? Simile: Metaphor:

Simile or Metaphor????  The baby was like an octopus, grabbing at all the cans on the grocery store shelves.  As the teacher entered the room she muttered under her breath, "This class is like a three-ring circus!"  The giant’s steps were thunder as he ran toward Jack.  The pillow was a cloud when I put my head upon it after a long day.

Simile or Metaphor????  I feel like a limp dishrag.  Those girls are like two peas in a pod.  The fluorescent light was the sun during our test.  No one invites Harold to parties because he’s a wet blanket.  The bar of soap was a slippery eel during the dog’s bath.  Ted was as nervous as a cat with a long tail in a room full of rocking chairs.

Using Lyrics to learn Similes/Metaphors Firework by Katy Perry  Do you ever feel like a plastic bag, Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again? Do you ever feel, feel so paper-thin Like a house of cards, then blow from caving in? Do you ever feel already buried deep? Six feet under screams, but no one seems to hear a thing Do you know that there's still a chance for you? 'Cause there's a spark in you You just gotta ignite the light, and let it shine Just own the night like the Fourth of July

 'Cause baby, you're a firework Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go "ah, ah, ah!" As you shoot across the sky-y-y Baby, you're a firework Come on, let your colors burst Make 'em go "ah, ah, ah!", You're gonna leave 'em all in down-awe-awe You don't have to feel like a waste of space You're original, cannot be replaced If you only knew what the future holds After a hurricane, comes a rainbow

 Maybe the reason why all the doors are closed So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road Like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow And when it's time you know You just gotta ignite the light, and let it shine Just own the night like the Fourth of July 'Cause baby, you're a firework Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go "ah, ah, ah!" As you shoot across the sky-y-y Baby, you're a firework Come on, let your colors burst You're gonna leave 'em falling down-awe-awe

 Boom, boom, boom Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon It's always been inside of you, you, you And now it's time you let it through-ooh-ooh 'Cause baby, you're a firework Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go "ah, ah, ah!" As you shoot across the sky-y-y Baby, you're a firework Come on, let your colors burst You're gonna leave 'em all in down-awe-awe Boom, boom, boom Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon Boom, boom, boom Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon lyrics sung by Katy Perry
