It has continued to share in the mission of the Church to spread Christ’s message under the inspiration and patronage of its model, St. Thomas Aquinas, the great theologian and doctor of the Church. It was founded on April 28, 1611 by Manila Archbishop Miguel de Benavides, O.P. It was given the title ‘Royal University’ on March 7, 1785 by King Charles III. On September 17, 1902, Pope Leo XIII made UST a ‘Pontifical University’ and finally in 1947, Pope Pius XII granted the title ‘The Catholic University of the Philippines’. UST was originally located in Intramuros, the old walled City, but in 1927 it was transferred to its present campus in Sampaloc.
