DEADLINE: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3 Honoring our Heroes Do you know a real life hero? Real life heroes are grandparents, siblings, doctors, policemen, soldiers, teachers, or anyone who has made an impact on a student’s life. This person is NOT a celebrity. These heroes have shown generosity, trust, dedication, leadership, bravery, imagination, persistence, caring, service, courage, or compassion.

HERO ESSAY  The winning essay will be selected from each grade level.  Winners, parents, hero, and family will be invited to a reception in March.  Final submission will require an entry form, essay, and student picture with the hero.

HEROES WE NEVER NAME  Back of the men we honor Enrolled on the scroll of fame, Are the millions who go unmentioned - The heroes we never name! Those who have won us the victories, And conquered along the way; Those who have made us a nation - A tribute to them I would pay. Back of our nation's first leader, Of Lincoln and Wilson, too, Back of the mind directing our course Was the army that carried it through. Back of the generals and captains Was the tramping of rank and file, And back of them were the ones at home Who labored with tear and with smile. And What of the "everyday" heroes Whose courage and efforts ne'er cease! Toilers who struggle and labor and strive And hope for a future of peace? Hats off to the worthy leaders; Their honor I'd ever acclaim - But here's a cheer for the many brave, The heroes we never name. B  y M. Lucille Ford

HEROES NOTE TAKING My hero is my grandfather.Date/place of birth 1932/Kentucky Brief life historyBorn in Kentucky, Farm worker Major AccomplishmentsNavy, traveled the world, worked for trucking company (personnel) Heroic characteristics 1. Hardworking 2. Self-less 1. Served in navy 2. Served in World War II 3. Put other’s needs before his own 1. Took care of my grandmother when she was sick 2. Cooked for her 3. Gave her medicine 4. Gave up his everyday freedom

BRIEF LIFE HISTORY One of the greatest heroes of all time is not someone who is especially famous. He never earned a purple heart, never starred in a television show, or won an Academy Award. Maurice Porter was a simple man, an honest man, and a family man. Most certainly, he was a hero to me. My grandfather was born in Kentucky in a small farmhouse, on the edge of the Tennessee/Kentucky state line in November of 1932.

MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS * NAVY, * TRAVELED THE WORLD, * * WORKED FOR TRUCKING COMPANY (PERSONNEL) Major Accomplishments My grandfather had many major accomplishments. As a young man, he served in the navy. He traveled the world, helping to keep our country safe. He always told stories about his many adventures. He also served in World War II. This was a dangerous time for many of our naval officers, but he never complained about the hard work that he had to do. Later, he worked for a trucking company and earned many prestigious awards at work. He most definitely was a hard worker throughout his life.

SELF LESS One heroic characteristic of my grandfather was how he was self-less. When my grandmother became sick with Alzheimer’s disease, he took over her caregiving. He cooked her breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. He also took her to all her doctor’s appointments and gave her medicine each day. My grandfather even gave up the freedom to go to the store alone, or run errands. He was totally responsible for the medical care of my grandmother every day until he passed away. We took for granted how much he did for her. - Took care of my grandmother - Cooked for her - Gave her medicine - Gave up his everyday life

LESSON LEARNED  One of the things that I learned from my grandfather was to put other people first. Maurice Porter was a godly man who always looked for opportunities to serve his country and his family. He dedicated his life to helping others. Although he is no longer with us, he will always be remembered for his self-sacrifice. I hope that I can follow his example. - What can we learn from this person?
