Masculinity Discussion

What does our society expect from a male? How does this differ from our expectation for females? Are these expectations changing, or will they change in the future?

Based on your Pease readings and our notes in class, what are boys good at? What do they struggle with?

According to Experts, what problems do boys face in the academic world? Why?

Do we need to fix the Educational system to make it more boy friendly? (Y/N). If Yes, how could that be done?

According to Experts, how have boys and men changed over the last few decades?

Do you think these observations are accurate? Why or why not? Give examples to support your opinion.

What role do women play in this perceived change? How are women affected by it?

How does the media affect the way a boy constructs his identity? How do boys’ identities affect what the media does?

Did your parents stress stereotypical gender roles? As a parent, will you stress the importance of gender roles? For example, will you encourage your son to play with trucks and tanks and then sign him up for football? Why or why not?

How does a male’s level of economic success affect the way he constructs his identity? (Think about the movie, but also about your own experiences)

What makes a boy “masculine?” Give the 3 most important characteristics and explain where they come from (nature/nurture) and how they are acquired.
