Culturally Responsive Teaching and Classroom Management Presenter: Melanie Trowel

Step 1: Self Reflection Being culturally proficient is a life-long process that begins with me. There must be an awareness of MY perceptions, biases, and beliefs in order to address the barriers to be the type of individual that values all people. We don’t have to agree, but, to be culurally proficient and culturally responsive to our students, we must value the perspectives and perceptions of others. The hard questions are, “How do we do that and what does that look like?”

Awareness of self and perceptions Activity 1.Country of family origin or heritage 2.Languages spoken 3.Interests or hobbies 4.Favorite type of movies 5.Preferred TV programs 6.Types of music 7.Pets or favorite animals

Cultural Proficient Continuum Lindsey, Delores B, Randall B. Lindsey, Kikanza Nuri-Robins, & RaymondD. Terrell. (2012). Culturally Proficient Instruction: A Guide for People Who Teach (3 rd ed.). Thousand Oaks, CA: Corwin.

Step 2: Conversation OH NO… … DON’T freak out…

Conversation 1. Describe your culture. 2. How does your culture affect your instruction and design? 3. Discuss the cultural backgrounds of your students and how you know about their backgrounds. 4. How do the cultural backgrounds of your students affect your instruction and design?

Sorting activity Those students with IEPs need to stay with Mr. Crayfish. They can’t read at this level. Bless their little hearts. Asians are really smart. The Holocaust. You can look at it from the perspective of a teaching tool or the event itself. Have a conversation with a student about why they celebrate a holiday to better understand their culture. Use learning styles in the classroom to guide instruction. I treat them all the same. Instructional student groups are organized thoughtfully to maximize learning and build on student strengths. Students have no choice on how they complete tasks. The teacher seeks out information about the cultural heritage from all students. Teacher is not aware of the of students’ medical or learning disabilities.

“Competence” and “Accomplished” Looking into TPGES

In order to be in the “Accomplished” one must be culturally responsive

What happens to behavior when your instruction is in the accomplished and exemplary?

Intentional Plan for intentional conversations.

Step 3: Be Intentional ASK QUESTIONS I’m sorry… I forgive you. How do you get your hair to do that? What are you listening to? Hello, how are you? What makes you believe that? Can you give me an example? Why do you feel that way… What are you eating? I will try… Be willing to learn and grow.

If we want the same results, we should continue doing the same things. “School failed me, and I failed the school. It bored me. The teachers behaved like Feldwebel (sergeants). I wanted to learn what I wanted to know, but they wanted me to learn for the exam. What I hated most was the competitive system there, and especially sports. Because of this, I wasn’t worth anything, and several times they suggested I leave.”

~Albert Einstein

Strategies for Culturally Responsive Classroom For a culturally responsive classroom, the instructor must be willing AND able to differentiate for the diverse learners. Differentiate through process, content, product, and assessment. Culturally responsive classroom establishes a learning community where learning and growing is a result of esteeming the differences of others. Culturally responsive classroom moves away from subject-based instruction to learner-centered instruction. Culturally responsive instructor focuses on transformation for equity.
