Health A combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. It’s important to pay attention to all three areas of your health triangle. If you concentrate too much or too little on one area, the triangle can become unbalanced.

Physical Health Five important actions you can do to get and keep a healthy body:  Getting 8-10 hours of sleep each night  Eat nutritious meals and drink eight cups of water each day.  Engage in minutes of moderate to vigorous activity.  Avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs  Bathe daily, and floss and brush your teeth every day.

Mental/Emotional Health Is a reflection of how you feel about yourself, how you meet the demands of your daily life, and how you cope with problems. People who are mentally & emotionally healthy:  Enjoy challenges that help them grow  Accept responsibility for their actions  Have a sense of control over their lives  Express their emotions in positive ways  Usually deal with life’s stresses & frustrations  Generally have a positive outlook  Make thoughtful and responsible decisions

Mental / Emotional Health Continued Spiritual Health: A deep-seated sense of meaning and purpose in life. Being spiritually healthy does not necessarily mean that you belong to a religious group although it could include being a member of a spiritual community. Spiritual health also involves having a sense of values.

Social Health Getting along with others is also known as social health. This includes your family, friends, teachers, and other members of your community. Ways to care for your social health:  Seeking and lending support when needed  Communicating clearly and listening to others  Showing respect and care for yourself and others

Wellness: keeping a balance Wellness: an overall state of well being, or total health Wellness comes from making decisions and practicing behaviors that are based on sound health knowledge and healthful attitudes. Maintaining wellness means keeping a balance among the three components of health. Achieving wellness requires an ongoing lifelong commitment.

THE HEALTH CONTINUUM (pg. 10) Your health and wellness are always changing. Your health at any moment can be seen as a point along a continuum. The continuum spans the complete range of health.

In class activity… In regards to the health spectrum, where are you right now?  Where do you want to be a month from now?  Where do you want to be a year from now? Explain how being health literate can help you to achieve and maintain these health related goals.
