survey of the Bible The Book of Proverbs

General Overview the book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings, mostly by Solomon (1 Kngs. 4:29-32) “proverb” – a concise statement teaching a general and practical truth like the Psalms, there is no narrative theme, though there is the overall theme of wisdom general divisions in the book ch.1-9  essays on wisdom and practical applications ch.10-31  individual proverbs

Theme of Proverbs the beauty and blessing of wisdom (1:1-7) more precious than treasures (3:13-18) instruction of the next generation (4:1-13) searching for wisdom (2:1-6) walking in wisdom (4:20-27) consequence of rejecting wisdom (1:28-33) the wisdom of God, not the world (1 Cor. 2:1-7)(Eph. 5:17)(James 3:17)

Importance to Christians usage of the Proverbs in the New Testament (25:21-22; Rom. 12:20)(3:11-12; Heb. 12:5-6) (3:34; James 4:6)(10:12; 11:31; 1 Pet. 4:8, 18) practical wisdom for all ages, including ours for marriages (5:15-21; 31:10)(Eph. 5:33) for families (15:17; 22:6; 13:24)(Eph. 6:4) for friendships (18:24; 22:24-25)(1 Cor. 15:33) (2 Tim. 2:22) for self-control (29:11; 14:29)(1 Cor. 9:27)

Conclusion the book of Proverbs is a reference book for many choices in life cannot get a practical understanding on just one reading, should refer to it periodically an excellent source of short, thought-provoking memory verses Prov. 3:3-4 3 Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart, 4 And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man.
