ROUND ONE: The Subtle Poison of Religion

Luke 11: When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table. 38 But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal. The Invitation – Luke 11:37

Luke 11: When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table. 38 But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal. The Shock – Luke 11:38 Jesus, you didn’t wash your hands!

Luke 11: Then the Lord said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. 40 You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor, and everything will be clean for you. “Talk to the (unwashed) Hand” – Luke 11:39-44 The Underlying Problem

Luke 11:42 42 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone. “Talk to the (unwashed) Hand” – Luke 11:39-44 Woe #1 – Forests and Trees (POW!!)

Luke 11: “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces. “Talk to the (unwashed) Hand” – Luke 11:39-44 Woe #2 – Important Seats (BAM!!)

Luke 11: “Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which people walk over without knowing it.” “Talk to the (unwashed) Hand” – Luke 11:39-44 Woe #3 – Unmarked Graves (WHAM!!)

What made the Pharisee “better” than Jesus in his own eyes?

His Religion!

Treichler’s Definition of Religion: a set of beliefs and actions that when believed and performed make a person right with God. The absence of belief and action, proves to a person and others that this person is not right with God.

Treichler’s Definition of Religion: Religion operates on the principle of “I obey -- therefore I am accepted by God.” The basic operating principle of the gospel is “I am accepted by God through the work of Jesus Christ -- therefore I obey.”

WAYS TO RESPOND TO GOD

WAY #1 Don’t want God Being Immoral Running from God Shows up in all kinds of bad stuff WAY #2 Want God Human effort Trying very hard Using Religion and behavior to be “better” than others who don’t seek God WAY #3 Wanting God Acknowledge helplessness & hopelessness of sin Trust Jesus ALONE REJECTION ACCPTED

ROUND TWO: The Danger of Being “Right”

Luke 11: One of the experts in the law answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.”

Luke 11: Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.

Luke 11: “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them. 48 So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’

Luke 11: Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.

Luke 11: “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”

Luke 11: When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.

Today’s Message: Jesus vs Religion: Round Two The Danger of being “Right” Luke 11:45-54

Luke 11:45 45 One of the experts in the law answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.” “Are you including us?” – Luke 11:45

Luke 11:45 45 One of the experts in the law answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.” “Are you including us?” – Luke 11:45 Who were the Scribes?

Luke 5:21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” We have seen the Scribes in Luke:

Luke 6:6-7 6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. 7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. We have seen the Scribes in Luke:

Luke 9: “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.” 21 Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. 22 And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” We have seen the Scribes in Luke:

“ The teachers of the law (= scribes = lawyers) were the antecedents to the later Jewish rabbis, and those of Pharisaic persuasion (cf. Luke 5:30; the majority were of Pharisaic persuasion) constituted a leadership group within the Pharisaic movement. The teachers of the law had a significant place in the political power structure of Judea (note their involvement alongside the chief priests in the events of the final days in Jerusalem [19:47; 20:1, 19; 22:2, 66; 23:10]). The teachers of the law functioned both as scholars of the law and teachers, and also had a role in the administration of justice. ~ John Nolland, Luke 1:1–9:20, vol. 35A, Word Biblical Commentary (Dallas: Word, Incorporated, 2002), 233– 234. Who were the Scribes?

Luke 11:46 46 Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them. “Yup” – Luke 11:45-53 Woe #4 – Loading up on people (POW!!)

“ The Pharisees were religionists, members of a religious party that enforced the legal code. The lawyers, scribes, or experts in the Law (the three terms are interchangeable) were the codifiers of the Law, the people who built hedges around it by encrusting it with myriads of extra regulations. Jesus’ woes to the Pharisees were swipes at their hypocritical religious practices, whereas the woes that fell on the lawyers had to do with the way they abused the Torah, God’s Word. The lawyers ladened the people with laws manufactured from the sacred text and designed to provide a protective crust for the Law. Eventually this crust became no less than 6,000 laws—a smothering incrustation!

“ For example, one of the thirty-nine categories forbade the carrying of burdens on the Sabbath and hedged it with minute prohibitions for every occasion. This section declared that anything equal to or heavier than a dried fig was a burden. So it was permissible to carry something that weighed less than a dried fig on the Sabbath. But if one inadvertently put it down and then picked it up, he would be counted as doubling the weight and thus breaking the Sabbath! ~ R. Kent Hughes, Luke: That You May Know the Truth, Preaching the Word, 28–30.

“ On the Sabbath if a man carries a burden: in his right hand or in his left hand, in his bosom or on his shoulder, he is culpable; for this last was the manner of carrying of the sons of Kohath. If [he took it out] on the back of his hand or with his foot or with his mouth or with his elbow, or in his ear or in his hair or in his wallet [carried] mouth downwards, or between his wallet and his shirt, or in the hem of his shirt, or in his shoe or in his sandal, he is not culpable since he has not taken it out after the fashion of them that take out [a burden]. ( M. Shabbath 10:3 )

Luke 11: “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them. 48 So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’ “Yup” – Luke 11:45-53 Woe #5 – You are in a long line of rejecters (BAM!!)

“Yup” – Luke 11:45-53 Woe #5 – You are in a long line of rejecters (BAM!!)

“ They killed the prophets: you make sure they stay dead. ~ T. W. Manson, Sayings, p. 101

Luke 11: “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.” “Yup” – Luke 11:45-53 Woe #6 – Take AWAY knowledge (WHAM!!)

“ The Bible is like a love-letter … and should be read in the same way. If the letter is written in a foreign language, the lover will need to decipher it with the aid of a dictionary, but he will regard the toil of translation as an irritating delay to the reading of the letter, a necessary evil, and he will certainly not imagine that he is reading the letter while he is still translating it. Therefore, “If thou art a learned man, then take care lest with all thy erudite reading thou forgettest perchance to read God’s Word.” ~ Karl Barth, as quoted in R. Kent Hughs, Luke Volume 2, p. 35

Luke 11: When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say. The Plot Thickens… Luke 11:53-54
