PARAGRAPH  Writing a Paragraph: Writing is an essential form of communication Effective writers are able to write  Focused  Clear  Thoughtful Paragraphs are the basic building block in becoming an effective writer and a great place to start our writing workshop.

FORMAL PARAGRAPH  Formal Paragraph: Usually written with a formal level of language Written for different purposes:  Essays  Cover letters  Textbooks  Gain reader's confidence  Deliver serious material Formal writing is often written in the third person  It uses the words: He She They  Avoids contractions uses does not instead of doesn't).

INFORMAL PARAGRAPH  Informal Paragraph: A writer may use informal language in a  Journal entry  Character's dialogue  Letter to a friend Informal language may use the first person (I, me my, we, etc.)  May use contractions.  Informal language may also use slang.

DESCRIPTIVE WRITTING  Descriptive Writing: Used to describe an image or feeling to the reader.
