SCS TNCore Rollout 2013 Study Group #4 Using Assessing and Advancing Questions to Arrive At Essential Understandings: Part 2- Asking Advancing Questions to Target the Essential Understandings

Session Rationale By engaging in an analysis of a lesson planning process, teachers will have the opportunity to consider the ways in which the process can be used to help them plan and reflect both individually and collectively, on instructional activities that are based on student thinking and understanding.

Session Goals Learn to set clear lesson goals Write essential understandings and consider their relationship to the Content Standards and Practices Write assessing and advancing questions that focus on the essential understanding

Session Overview Activities for this session include: Write Essential Understandings (EU’s) to further articulate the Content Practices and Standards Analyze student samples to determine whether there is evidence of student understanding Write Advancing Questions to move students toward mathematical understanding of the EU’s

Saving Money Task – 6 th Grade Task

Positive, Negative, or Neither Task 7 th Grade Task

Same or Different Task- 8 th Grade Task

Asking Advancing Questions that Target Essential Understandings The purpose is:

Bridge to Practice Go online to the Teaching Channel ( Establish an account. Next, observe two Common Core Teaching Lessons from the Teaching Channel. Evaluate the lessons to identify the components of the Structure and Routine of a lesson. Next, write a journal reflection on your noticings about the teacher’s use of assessing and advancing questions to move the students toward the mathematical learning goal. Be prepared to share your journal entry and the links with the whole group.
