Mr. Geerlings ENG 2D

 Remember that a lot of the news we consume today should not be taken as direct fact and absent of opinion  Be critical of what you read and watch – fact check the people who are suppose to be the fact checkers  Go to various news outlets to get a variety of sources and perspectives

 The OSSLT will require that you write a news report – you will be given a picture as well as a headline  Those marking the report are looking for precise and detailed information, as well as a logical organization of the facts  Learning to write a news report teaches you to write precisely and accurately – which applies to other areas of your life!

 A news report is an objective and factual report about an event  It should not include opinion or the writers perspective – only the facts written in an organized fashion  It should be written in fairly formal writing – but simplistic in design

 Headline ◦ Main title of the article ◦ Catches your attention and sums up the story  Byline ◦ Writer’s Name as well as their specialty (i.e., sports)  Lead ◦ Hooks reader’s interest with most important info ◦ Introduces topic and answers most of the 5Ws in 1-2 sentences  Body ◦ Supplies detail and fleshes out the 5Ws ◦ Most important details come first – simple true statements  Quotations ◦ What those involved in some way have to say ◦ Adds accuracy and ‘at the scene’ feeling  Wrap-Up ◦ Sum up the report – leave the reader thinking

Headline Lead (5Ws) Body Quotation Wrap-Up
