Shigellosis Shigellosis is an acute bacterial infection of the lining of the intestines. It was discovered in 1897 by Shiga, a Japanese researcher. The symptoms of Shigellosis usually last for about 2 to 7 days. Shigella bacteria are only found in humans. Shigellosis happens mostly in the intestines.

Causes of Shigellosis HIV infections Overcrowded living conditions Contact with infected person Contaminated water intake Contaminated food intake Travelers visiting affected countries Living in residence with poor sanitation

Preventions Washing hands with soap and water Adequate sanitation Proper food handling and storage Proper preparation of food Avoid contaminated food and water

Symptoms of Shigellosis Fever Diarrhea Vomiting Abdominal Pain Gastrointestinal Bleeding Blood in Stool Rectal Bleeding Mucus in Stool Crampy rectal pain Feels hot to touch Pain Nausea Headache Malaise Abdominal cramps Unable to eat

Complications Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (a disorder that usually occurs when an infection in the digestive system produces toxic substances that destroy red blood cells that often occurs in the kidneys) Seizures Severe dehydration Reiter’s Syndrome/Reactive arthritis (a group of inflammatory conditions that involves the joints, urethra, and your eyes)

Treatments for Shigellosis The first treatment should be to keep up your nutrition and avoid dehydration. Oral Rehydration which is the replacement of fluids and electrolytes (salt and minerals) that were lost during diarrhea. Drink fluids that contain electrolytes Antibiotics should only be used for severe cases and can shorten the duration of the illness

Statistics Statistics show that during 2009 there have been a 75% decrease in the 311 cases reported in 2008.
