Exposure Compensation by Trissy Brandvold

Under most conditions, cameras will automatically adjust the exposure for good results. But with overly light (such as snow) or dark subjects, the camera’s automatic results will be poor. Under these conditions, better results can be achieved by manually adjusting the exposure compensation. Picture with automatic exposure adjustment. Picture with manual exposure adjustment.

Many digital cameras have a way to adjust the exposure. Some will have a +/- button, others a button called EV (exposure value). The following slides present three examples.

Kodak EasyShare Z730 1.Set the dial so the letter “P” is lined up with the white line. 2.The bottom of the screen will display the exposure compensation value and other options to change.

3.Use the toggle switch at the top right part of the camera to toggle back and forth among the settings. 4.The exposure compensation setting is the third from the right. 5.Press the toggle switch to select and change the exposure compensation settings.

Canon Powershot On this Canon Powershot, pressing the Function/Set button allows access to the exposure compensation adjustment.

Sony Cyber-shot Pressing the menu button on this Sony Cyber-shot camera allows access to the EV function where exposure compensation can be adjusted.
